TYLER, TEXAS (Feb. 7, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost a close game to Texas College (TC) 86-82 yesterday to snap the four-game winning streak. The Saints drop to 8-14 overall and 4-8 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Steers improve to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in conference.
Head Coach Chris Dial said, "We made too many mental errors and didn't pay enough attention to our defensive assignments. We have to approach the next game with a back against the wall mentality."
The Saints are 16-6 against Texas College but have lost the previous two games. The Steers beat the Saints 86-77 earlier this season.
The Saints started the first half strong and led by nine points early. The Steers responded and took the lead four minutes later. Texas College led at halftime by four points and shot 43.8 percent from the field. Marlon Williams (JR/Jacksonville, Fla.) tallied 12 points for the Saints and Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) grabbed six rebounds.
Despite turning the ball over 10 times in the second half, the Saints led by six with three minutes remaining. OLLU committed two fouls to give the lead back to Texas College after Marquis Webb and Robert Lester hit their free throws. The Steers led by four points after Demetrious Fitzpatrick hit both of his free throws with 16 seconds left. Michael Saladin (SR/Beaumont, Texas) missed a last minute three-pointer and the Steers held on to win 86-82.
Williams finished with a season-high 18 points. Monzon tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Saladin led the Saints with 20 points, followed by Williams with 18 and Monzon with 14. Monzon tallied a team-high 12 rebounds. Estefan Trevino (SO/San Antonio, Texas) led the Saints with four assists.
Fitzpatrick led the Steers with 19 points. Webb and Lester led the team with six rebounds each. Fitzpatrick and Christian Bryant tallied a team-high three assists each.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 27-of-60 shooting for 45 percent, 10-of-22 from three-point range for 45.5 percent and 18-of-23 from the free-throw line for 78.3 percent. Texas College shot 28-of-65 for 43.1 percent, 10-of-27 three pointers for 37 percent and 20-of-23 from the free-throw line for 87 percent.
The Saints grabbed 37 rebounds while the Steers collected 36. OLLU forced 11 turnovers and committed 20.
The Saints head to Hawkins, Texas to face Jarvis Christian College on Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.
