SHREVEPORT, LA. (Feb. 14, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) 105-103 in overtime yesterday. The Saints improve to 21-5 overall and 13-1 in conference, while the Pilots fall to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in conference. This was the first win for the Saints in Shreveport since the 2015-16 season.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens said, "I can't talk enough about how the whole team responded. We have things to work on, but I am excited about the talent on this team and how they play for each other. It's a team game and our team stuck together. We communicated and fought throughout the entire game."
The Saints are 15-13 against the Pilots in the series. LSUS handed the Saints its first conference loss earlier this season 65-61.
The Saints were held to a season low seven points in the first quarter. The Pilots shot 41.2 percent from the field and limited the Saints to 21.4 percent. LSUS continued the dominant play in the second quarter and led by 13 points at halftime. Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) led the team with six points at halftime and Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) grabbed four rebounds.
In the third quarter the Saints stormed back from down 54-46 to lead 62-54. They scored 16 unanswered points and led 62-54 heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter had five ties and nine lead changes. The Saints led by four points with 20 seconds remaining. Leah Silva hit two free throws to bring the Pilots within two points. After Keviona Barber (JR/Chicago, Ill.) missed both free throws, Silva sunk a three-pointer with five seconds remaining to put LSUS up by two points. White raced down the court and hit a field goal at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Barber hit a free throw to put the Saints up 105-103 with 22 seconds remaining. DeAuja Thompson had a wide open lay up to tie the game at the buzzer but failed to make it. The Saints won 105-103 and have now won nine straight games. Six players for the Saints scored in double-digits.
Barber led the Saints in scoring with 22 points, followed by White and Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) with 19 each. White led the team with 11 rebounds and Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) followed with 10, resulting in a double-double for both players. Barber led the Saints with four assists.
LSUS was led by Fu'tra Banks with 34 points. She also led the team with 12 rebounds. Taylor Jacob contributed a team high nine assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 36-of-72 shooting for 50 percent, 8-of-15 from three-point range for 53.3 percent and 25-of-39 from the free-throw line for 64.1 percent. LSUS shot 34-of-79 for 43 percent, 13-of-27 three pointers for 48.1 percent and 22-of-31 from the free-throw line for 71 percent.
The Saints collected 40 rebounds while the Pilots grabbed 53. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed seven.
The Saints continue conference play against LSU-Alexandria in Alexandria, La. on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
