LUBBOCK, TEXAS (Feb. 21-22, 2020) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) indoor track and field team participated in the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier this weekend. During the meet, Miki Romain (SR/Austin, Texas) qualified for her third NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 60m hurdles.
Head Coach Stephen Sherman said, "The group that we took to this meet was a sprints and jumps crew, which was comprised of those who had a good chance to set significant school records and or had a good chance at qualifying for the NAIA indoor meet. With that being said, we came away with one NAIA meet qualifier (Miki Romain), two near misses for NAIA meet qualification (Andrea Culliver in the triple jump and the women's 4x4) and four school records (men's 60m and 60m hurdles and women's 4x4 and triple jump). I was very impressed with our showing, to say the least."
Lauren Perry (FR/DeSoto, Texas)
Paul Williams (FR/Houston, Texas)
Clayton Townsend (SR/Schertz, Texas)
"It came down to just one more chance for Miki to qualify," Sherman commented. "And she handled it with the composure of a senior and multi-time national qualifier. Her race was more or less a textbook display of composure, desire and technique. Obviously, we are very proud of her.
Sherman also said, "It would be remiss of me to not give Aundrea at least a nod for her performance in the triple jump and 4x4. To miss qualifying for the NAIA meet in the triple jump by a literal centimeter on the last jump of the last indoor meet as a Saint that she will ever compete in is one of the most heart-wrenching things I've ever witnessed in my years of coaching. She handled it with dignity and pride, however, and came back with a dominant leg in the 4x4, which also was an effort that unfortunately just came up short. At the end of the day, Aundrea has meant a lot to this program, and if deserve has anything to do with it she deserves good things this outdoor season."
Assistant Coach Terry Smith, who manages most of the track events, "has done a fantastic job with this group, and this meet was further proof of that," Sherman concluded.
Romain will prepare for the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet March 5-7 in Brookings, S.D. The rest of the team will now get set for the outdoor season that begins March 6 at Trinity University in San Antonio.
