SPRINGFIELD, MO. (Dec. 19, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Evangel University (EU) 92-72 for its first win of the season. The Saints improve to 1-1 while the Crusaders drop to 5-3. Dezeree White scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds, one shy of earning a double-double.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens said, "I'm so proud of the team and how they responded from yesterday. We watched film and saw improvement on the court today. It was fun playing Evangel; they are a tough matchup and played hard the whole game. It was a fun trip to Springfield, and I am grateful that we finally got to play games. We appreciate the hospitality that Evangel and the city showed us."
History
This is the second matchup against Evangel University. The Saints defeated the Crusaders 76-59 in 2013.
Basics
There were multiple lead changes throughout the first quarter. Dezeree White accounted for half of the Saints points with 12 and OLLU led 24-23 going into the second quarter. OLLU scored six unanswered points to open the second frame and never looked back. The Saints took a 44-33 lead going into halftime.
The Saints recorded 26 points in the third quarter and scored 20 or more points in the other frames. OLLU increased its lead to 70-50 and entered the fourth quarter in a dominant fashion. OLLU's bench players scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Saints to a 92-72 victory.
Ny'Asia Goldman, Gabrielle Guzman, Atlantis White, Cormia Lewis and Tiffany Lopez all appeared off the bench for the Saints. The Saints shot 50 percent from the field and forced 27 turnovers from the Crusaders.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Dezeree White led the Saints with 30 points, followed by Zerina Shatri with 12 and Natalia Trevino with 11. Dezeree White finished with a team-leading nine rebounds. Keviona Barber and Dezeree White tallied a team-high four assists apiece.
Brianna Vogts led the Crusaders with 17 points. She also led the team with 13 rebounds for a double-double. Bayley Harman picked up a double-double as well. Sadie Chisum tallied six assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 38-of-76 shooting for 50 percent, 6-of-23 from three-point range for 26.1 percent and 10-of-15 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 41 rebounds while the Crusaders collected 48. OLLU forced 27 turnovers and committed 17.
