The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's volleyball team notched another conference win when they took down the Huston-Tillotson University Rams in straight sets, 25-19, 25-15, and 25-7 Tuesday at Mabee Gymnasium. The win evened the Saints' record at 7-5 on the season, but more importantly, improved their conference record to 2-2.
The Saints battled hard in the first set and after each team put together rallies of its own, the Saints found themselves tied at 16. The Saints then scored five straight points behind strong serves by sophomore right-side hitter Liza Rodriguez, and a crafty dump to fool the Rams defense by sophomore setter Elyse Escobar. With the score 21-16, the Rams fell apart and the Saints eagerly took advantage. Senior middle blocker Melanie Valenciana and freshman middle blocker Jasmine Price proved to be too much for the Rams at the net as both players registered powerful kills to bring the Saints to set point, 24-19. The final play of the first set proved to be anti-climatic as the Rams' communication broke down and the ball fell to the floor, giving the Saints the first set in the best-of-five series.
The second set began with Escobar and junior libero Sarah Lindsay providing the offense for the Saints, leading them to an early 6-2 lead. After the Rams managed a couple of points, junior middle blocker Kelsey Johnson ended the rally with a powerful kill followed by a tip over the Rams defense to give the Saints a 9-5 lead. Valencia added one block and two cross-court kills of her own and the Saints never looked back as they cruised to a 16-9 lead.
Throughout the match, the Saints defense scrambled and frustrated the Rams offense. With Huston-Tillotson busy searching for an answer to the Saints defense, Johnson and Rodriguez continued to shred the Rams defense, giving the Saints their second set point, 24-14. This time, the Saints did not wait for the Rams to make a mistake. Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Herrera finished off the set with a thunderous kill to give the Saints a 25-14 win and a two games to none lead in the match.
The third set was the shortest of the night as the Saints greedily dominated the net and out-hustled the Rams at every turn. Senior middle blocker Robyn Bush led the Saints to a 7-2 lead with crafty play that included a kill and a dump to keep the Rams defense guessing. Escobar followed suit with an ace and Rodriguez's kill stretched the Saints lead to 15-3. Junior outside hitter Lauren Eveler bookended senior defensive specialist Danielle Oterro's ace with two kills to bring the Saints to match point 24-7. Price left nothing to question with a thunderous kill to give the Saints a 25-7 win that gave them the straight set victory.
Escobar finished the game with 12 assists, six digs, and five kills. Johnson finished with four digs and six kills. Rodriguez totaled two aces, four digs and five kills. Lindsay finished with three aces and seven digs.
