The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team traveled to Fort Worth this week to play a conference match against Texas Wesleyan University on Oct. 8. With less than a minute left in double-overtime, senior Eric Torkildsen scored the game-winning goal to give the Saints the 3-2 win.
Sophomore Ramon Rodriguez gave the Saints an early lead as he scored the first two goals in the game. The first, at 23:39, was an unassisted goal, and the second at just over 25 minutes was scored on an assist by freshman Humberto Saenz. Two minutes before the end of the half, TWU's Rafael Franco converted a penalty kick to bring the score to 2-1.
The score stayed at 2-1 until TWU's Theo Nabassi scored on an assist by Ricardo Aguilera in the 59th minute tieing the game at two.
In what proved to be a defensive showdown between the two Red River Conference teams, the Saints finally prevailed during the second overtime when Torkildsen shot the winning goal.
Rodriguez led the Saints in shots with seven, five of which were on goal. Freshman Salim Sandoval shot three, one of which was on goal. The Saints compiled 22 shots, with 11 shots on goal, while TWU shot 22, but just three on goal.
The Saints evened out their overall record at 4-4, and 1-1 in conference play. TWU is now 8-4, 1-2 in the conference.
