Three-game sweep of Southwest keeps OLLU softball in second place in conference

HOBBS, N,M, (April 4, 2011) - Hannah Godina and Tiffany Stritz delivered performances worthy of Red River Athletic Conference weekly honors as they helped the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints softball team sweep the University of the Southwest this past weekend.
The Saints toppled the Lady Mustangs 5-3, 9-4 and 4-3 and improved to 12-3 in the conference, while USW drops to 7-8. The Saints are a one-and-a-half games behind league-leading Northwood, who is 15-3.
Stritz remained on the mound for all seven innings in the first game as she allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out two. In game three on Sunday, Stritz went the distance, which included an extra inning, to secure the win for the Saints. She allowed eight hits and three runs, while striking out nine and walking two.
Melanie Gonzalez started the second game and was relieved by Kailyn Miller (at right), who pitched five and a third innings. She allowed no runs and three hits, and struck out five to record the win for the Saints.
Godina went 2-for-4 in the first game and drove in a run. Shelby Worrell and Kimberlee Briseno each went 2-for-3. First-baseman Brooke Hernandez had seven put-outs in the game.
Worrell went 3-for-4 in the second game and drove in two runs with three RBI. Godina went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs with two RBI. Hernandez and Ashley Elizalde each had two hits on four at-bats. Worrell finished with eight put-outs.
Kaitlyn Bourg went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Stritz went 2-for-4 with two runs in the last game of the series. Worrell had nine put-outs.
Rounding out the conference standings are third-place Texas Wesleyan (7-5), fourth-place, Langston University (6-6), fifth-place USW (7-8), sixth-place Huston-Tillotson University (6-9), seventh-place Bacone College (3-12) and eighth-place Texas College (1-11).
The Saints will be in Oklahoma on Saturday and Sunday to play conference-opponent Bacone College. They'll return home to play a nonconference double-header against Texas Southern University on April 12 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
