The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) cross-country team competed in the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Invitational Saturday at Live Oak City Park in San Antonio. The event was marred by sloppy conditions and a last-minute change to the course due to the weather.
"The [team] responded well to the conditions and all ran pretty well," said Sherman.
The meet was dominated by the University of Texas at Austin. Out of the first nine runners that crossed the finish line, seven were Longhorns. Freshman Miriam Vazquez was the first Saint to finish the race.
Vazquez crossed the line with a time of 22:03.7 with a 7:03 pace. The time was good enough to earn Vazquez 19th place out of 69 runners. Sophomore Brandis Hurt finished the race with a time of 24:30.2 and a 7:54 pace. Freshman Jessica McGlothlin finished seconds behind her with a time of 25:00.9 and an 8:04 pace. Sophomore Katherine Brunner finished with a time of 27:39.1 and a pace of 8:55. Sophomore Bernadette Grajeda finished the race with a time of 31:51.1 and a pace of 10:16.
Despite the last minute redesign that left the course slightly longer than the usual 3.1 miles, the times posted by the Saints remained impressive.
"A couple of the [runners] would even have likely run personal records had the course been the standard 3.1 miles," Sherman said. "That said, I would like to sincerely thank UIW head coach Derek Riedel for working hard to ensure the meet was a quality meet despite the weather conditions."
The Saints will next compete Oct. 24 in the Mid-States Classic in Winfield, Kansas.
