The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's volleyball team dropped a pivotal conference showdown with the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lady Lions Friday 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, and 19-25. A win by the Saints would have moved them into sole possession of third place within the Red River Athletic Conference standings, however, the loss leaves them firmly seeded in fourth position, three games behind the undefeated University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB)

The Saints started the match string as senior middle blocker Robyn Bush and senior middle blocker Melanie Valenciana kept OLLU within arm's reach of the Lions with several plays at the net to start 4-4. After a block by sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Herrera evened the score at 5-5, Bush took advantage of a Lions set that was too close to the net and slammed it back to give the Saints an early 6-5 lead. Shortly after a kill by sophomore outside hitter Liza Rodriguez and another kill by Bush, sophomore setter Elyse Escobar notched an ace to push the Saints ahead 10-6. After the Lions battled back to tie the score at 19-19, the Saints could not find an answer to the rally and the Lions finished off the first set, 25-21.

Much like the team has done all season long, the Saints were determined to answer in the second set, but an early 10-7 lead by the Lions seemed poised to disappoint OLLU. After an unforced error by the Lions, junior outside hitter Kelsey Johnson and senior defensive specialist Danielle Otero registered aces to pull the Saints even at 11-11. After a strong dig by Otero set up freshman outside hitter Norma Fraga's kill, the Saints found themselves ahead 13-12. Kills by Rodriguez, Johnson and Valenciana pushed the lead to 16-14. With the score tied at 23-23 late in the set, the Lions again hit into the net to give the Saints set point, 24-23. Rodriguez quickly took advantage and placed a ball to the back corner of the Lions defense to secure the set, 25-23.

The second set proved too costly to the Saints as the Lions stepped up the intensity at the net in the third set and OLLU was unable to respond. Tied at 12-12, the Lions went on a 13-4 run and finished off the third set, 25-16.

The fourth set left the Saints again trying to battle through a stingy Lions defense that seemed to capitalize on every Saints miscue. The Lions led throughout the last set on their way to the match victory.

Escobar finished the game with 26 assists, six digs and three aces. Rodriguez ended the game with 13 kills and two blocks, while Johnson finished with eight digs, six kills, and two aces. Bush finished with six kills and three blocks.

The Saints next game will be away against Jarvis Christian College Friday. The next home match for the Saints will be Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. against UTB.
