SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 24, 2011) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's soccer team had a field day on its opening preparation match against Schreiner University with a dominating 8-0 performance Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Backus had little to worry about as the Saints pinned the Mountaineers in their own half. OLLU came up with 25 shots on goal while SU was only able to provide one that Backus fended off with ease.
Senior Evelyn Robledo and freshman Stephanie Rodriguez contributed to the win with a brace each. Robledo scored in the sixth and ninth minute of play. Rodriguez made a living out on the right side of the pitch and bagged her two goals of the day on the 25th and 43rd minute. Junior captain Abby DuLaney rounded off the half with a goal right on the stroke of halftime.
The Saints got rolling only four minutes into the restart with a simple tap in from sophomore Brianna Otis set up by freshman Stephanie Diaz on a brilliant solo effort to get in behind the defense. Diaz, who was a menace for the SU defense the entire game with 11 total shots, eight of which were on target, got her name on the score sheet with a goal in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Megan Ochoa cemented the win with an eighth goal nine minutes from time.
The win over the Mountaineers provides the Saints with the perfect start to the 2011 season with a 1-0 record. The Saints will now travel to Prescott, Ariz., to face off against Embry-Riddle University and Concordia University on Aug. 26 and 27.
