SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 23, 2011) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team began its 2011 season with a 2-1 win at home against Schreiner University.

The match was heavily contested in the middle of the pitch as both teams fought for possession. Junior transfer Steven Salinas made a dream debut for the Saints putting the ball in the back of the net with only nine minutes gone.

Gerardo Marquez -- 8-23-11Freshman Brandon Head could have doubled the lead for the Saints before the break when he was sent through on goal after a cheeky back heel pass from junior midfielder Gerardo Marquez, (at right) but his shot sailed high. The half ended with the Saints holding on to a 1-0 lead.

Only three minutes into the second half the Mountaineers drew themselves level when midfielder Sam Grant let off a left-footed shot from 20 yards out that found the bottom corner. Saints goalkeeper, sophomore Nick Garza could do nothing about it.

Momentum swung in favor of SU as they put a stretched OLLU back line under pressure but failed to cash in the opportunities.

SU goalkeeper Tim Martinez brought down Head in the box awarding a penalty for the Saints in the 82nd minute. Head netted from the spot sending Martinez in the opposite direction.

Three minutes from the final whistle, Head beat the offside trap going one on one against Martinez that would have sealed the match for the Saints, but sent his shot high off the mark.

Despite the missed opportunity, the final whistle blew with a final score of 2-1 in favor of the Saints who get their first win of the season. The Saints will travel to Prescott, Ariz. for their next fixtures Aug. 26 and 27.
