SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 6, 2011)—The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's cross-country team is starting its second season with a completely new line-up as head coach Stephen Sherman is using this season to rebuild his team.
With all of the runners from the inaugural team having graduated or left for other reasons, coach Sherman has began filling his roster with freshmen whom he can build a strong team around for the next couple of years.
The current roster is only three runners deep, but Sherman feels that they provide a solid foundation to continue building. "All three are very talented, but they will need to work very hard," he said. Although he notes that each runner has tremendous talent, he expects David Duque to lead the pack based on his high school performance. Other new members include Christopher Robins from LaPorte, and Jonathan Cededa from Santa Rosa.
Since there are not enough runners to make a complete team, the men will only post individual scores during their competitions, and Sherman says that only time will tell how the three will fare in collegiate-level competitions. "Wwe have not run any races yet, so we'll have to see how they do once competition starts."
Even though the Saints do not host any meets this year, fans can watch them compete in the UTSA Ricardo Romo Relays on Sept. 16, and the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinal Invitational on Oct. 8.
The Saints' open their season on Sept. 10 when they travel to Abilene to compete in the Bill Libby Invitational.
