It took the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team 99 minutes to dispose of the Bacone College Warriors Thursday at the OLLU soccer field. In the end, it was an overtime scramble in the goal mouth, and a goal by junior midfielder Cesar Dominguez that gave the Saints a 1-0 lead.
The Saints looked to be on the fast-track early in the game, but a seventh minute goal by sophomore forward Ramon Rodriguez was disallowed due to an offside call. Rodriguez, the reigning Red River Athletic Conference offensive player of the week, was back at it nearly eight minutes later challenging the Bacone defense with a hard challenge that resulted in a yellow card for the opposition.
Despite dominating the play throughout the first half, the Saints could not find the finishing touch. OLLU managed seven shots during the first half, compared to none for the Warriors.
Seventeen minutes into the second half, the Saints were nearly stunned when a shot from a Bacone forward struck the crossbar and cleared out of play. The wake-up call was all the Saints needed, and they quickly managed to steal back momentum. The Bacone defense nearly buckled under the pressure from OLLU when junior defender Heriberto Salinas' header struck the side netting with five minutes to play. The Saints managed two more chances from point blank range, but both opportunities were stopped by the Bacone goalkeeper to send the game into sudden death overtime.
Nine minutes into the first 10-minute overtime session, Salinas' long throw was met in the Bacone penalty area by several players who wrestled for control of the ball. Bacone looked to have cleared it, but Dominguez gained possession and coolly tucked the ball into the back of the net to give the Saints the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marco Herrera registered his fifth shutout of the season. Rodriguez led all Saints with six shots. Salinas finished with three shots. Freshman midfielder Ramiro Ramirez and junior forward Eric Torkildsen both finished with two shots. For the game, the Saints outshot the Warriors 19-2.
The Saints' next game will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the OLLU soccer field when they face Texas College.
