SAN ANTONIO (Oct.12, 2011) -- The last non-conference match for the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team required double overtime to name a winner.
The Saints emerged victorious over the University of Houston – Victoria (UHV) in the second period of overtime with a golden goal courtesy of Brandon Head.
OLLU came into the match with a five game win streak and back-to-back 6-0 performances against Bacone College and Texas College.
The win puts the Saints 1/2 game behind first-place Huston-Tillotson (6-0/10-2) and improves the Saints record to 5-0 and 8-3-1. One-half game behind the Saints is the University of Texas at Brownsville (5-0-1/7-3-2) and Texas Wesleyan University (3-1-1/6-4-2).
For much of the match the Saints enjoyed possession of the ball, but really lacked in providing a good ball in the final third.
The Saints let off 20 shots but only nine of them were on target forcing UHV goalkeeper Nathan Kenyon to come up with eight saves.
Nick Garza kept a clean sheet for the Saints coming up with seven saves of his own.
OLLU's AJ Gonzalez and UHV's Hector Gonzalez were both shown yellow cards during the match.
The only goal of the match came in the 106th minute of the match when Steven Salinas (at right) took on a defender down the left side of the pitch and sent in a low cross that Head was able to poke in at the first post.
Gerardo Marquez led the Saints in shots with four, one of which was on goal. Ramiro Ramirez followed with three shots, one on goal. UHV's Stiven Ospina and Cesar Martinez led their team in shots with four each.
The Saints have now won six in a row and will look to remain perfect in conference when they go on the road for matches against Southwestern Assemblies of God University and Huston-Tillotson University Oct. 13 and 15.
The next home match for OLLU will be Oct. 20 against Northwood University.
