AUSTIN, TEXAS (Oct. 15, 2011) -- The Saints of Our Lady of the Lake University had a chance to jump up in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) standings on Saturday evening in the game against Huston-Tillotson University; however, the battle between OLLU, who before the game was half a game behind no. 1 Huston-Tillotson, did not go the Saints' way. The Rams (8-0/12-2) won 1-0 to remain at the top of the league, while UT-Brownsville (6-1-1/8-4-2) leaped over the Saints to the no. 2 spot at one and a half games behind. The Saints (5-1-1/8-4-2) are two games behind. Texas Wesleyan University (4-2-1/7-5-2), Northwood University (5-3/7-7) and University of St. Thomas (5-3/5-6-1) are three games behind.
The referees doled out five yellow cards – a clear indication that because of the importance of the game, the competition needed to be kept on target and free of overt emotion on the field.
Saints' keeper Nick Garza recorded only two saves in the game, while Rams' keeper Marcos Sanchez saved nine from the net. In fact, of the nine shots the Rams took, only three were on goal. The Saints, however, took 17 shots, 10 on goal. The game-winner came fairly early in the first half at the 18th minute when Catalino Rodriguez took the shot on an assist from Franks Toscano.
OLLU's Ramiro Ramirez led the Saints in shots with five; Brandon Head and Gerardo Marquez each had four.
The Saints will continue their conference schedule on Thursday when they play at home against Northwood University. In five previous meetings between the Knights and OLLU, the Saints have won all games.
