Sophomore Brady Viertel shot an opening round of 78 and a final round of 78 to take top honors at the Schreiner Women's Fall Classic golf tournament Monday and today in Kerrville, Texas.

Viertel, an education major at OLLU, also excels academically and has been on the University's Dean's List since she arrived in 2008.
Viertel's Monday opening round was good enough to place her in second place, one shot behind leader, A. Katie Harris of the University of Texas at Tyler and tied with Alicia Yoder of the University of Texas at Dallas.

Today's second round score was three better than Harris, but left her tied on top of the leader board with Yoder, who also shot a second round 78.

With Viertel and Yoder both tied for first, Viertel was declared the winner in a scorecard playoff.

Overall, Viertel's consistent play netted her the tournament. Statistically, she placed in the top four of each par classification. On par-3 holes, she placed third with a 3.5 average. On par-4 holes, she placed fourth with a 4.45 average, and on par-5 holes, she placed third with a 5.33 average. She also finished with two birdies and 16 pars.

Viertel's previous best finish at a tournament this year was 14th place out of 53 golfers at the Northeastern State University NSU Classic.

Freshman Jordyn Dougal placed fifth overall, after shooting an opening round of 83, and a final round of 78. Freshman Alice Espinosa placed 30th overall.

The three student athletes competed individually; a team must consist of four members to compete as a team.

The University of Texas at Tyler team came in 1st place.

Other schools competing in the tournament included the University of Texas at Dallas, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Texas A&M International University, Concordia University and Schreiner University.

The Schreiner tournament was the last event on this season's schedule for the Saints' women's golf team. They will begin conference play in the spring.
