SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 21, 2011) -- Five players scored in double digits to help the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team rout the Lady Lobos from Sul Ross State University 105-62 Monday evening. The non-conference win improved the Saints record to 3-1, while Sul Ross, who opened its season tonight, starts at 0-1.
The first play of the game was an indication of how the entire game would end up as the Lady Lobos gained possession and immediately turned it over. Treshenia Solomon retrieved the ball and made the first points for the Saints. Within the first five minutes of the game, the Lady Lobos had already tacked on 11 turnovers as the Saints led 19-7.
SRU wasn't getting many chances to score, as the team shot two of five from outside the paint and ditto from 3-point range. For the Saints, they were sinking 50 percent of their shots, but were continuing to force 14 turnovers, including eight steals.
Stacey Darnley accumulated 11 points including several 3-pointers to push the Saints to 49-21, and after an under-the-basket sinker from Alisha Crump, (at right) the Saints took their biggest lead of the game at 51-21.
The first Sul Ross steal came shortly after and resulted in a 3-pointer for the team, but the Saints offered no breaks for the Lady Lobos as the buzzer went off with OLLU leading 60-26. At the half, the Saints stayed at 50 percent from the field, while making 81 percent of their free throws. The Saints out-rebounded the Lady Lobos 23 to 18, while forcing 24 turnovers and giving up 12.
Sul Ross inbounded to begin the second half and immediately turned the ball over. A 3-pointer from Darnley gave the Saints the 65-36 lead. Suddenly the Lady Lobos showed some signs of life as they went on a 7-0 run after four quick turnovers by OLLU. A 3-pointer from Chelsea Solis and two free throws squashed any further run attempts by the Lady Lobos as the Saints now led 70-43.
With less than 13 minutes left in the game, the Saints' shooting percentage came down a bit to 46 percent, while the Lady Lobos improved to 49 percent. But turnovers were plentiful for the team as they now committed 31, while the Saints stayed at their first half total of 12.
Jennifer Davison scored an awesome reverse layup from underneath the basket as the Saints increased their lead to 80-47. A few minutes later, as the Lady Lobos were attempting a fast break, Nikkia Davis stole the ball from Sul Ross guard Shaquana Wall's hand to run it down the court for an easy layup.
With less than six minutes left in the game, the Saints reached the century mark at 101-53. Sul Ross then went on a 9-4 run as the game came to an end. The Saints won 105-62.
Crump led the Saints in scoring with 12, including two of three from the field and eight of 13 from the charity strip. Darnley and Nashae Owens each finished with 11 points, with Darnley making four of 13 from the field, and three of 10 from 3-point range, and Owens making four of six from the field and three of four from the free-throw line. Jasmine Fuller and Davis each added 10 points, with Fuller making three of six from the field and four of four free throws, and Davis making four of five from the field and two of four free throws. Solomon was the Saints' lead rebounder with seven, while Chelsea Kellogg (at left), Owens and Arlene Cisneros each had three assists. Darnley led the team in steals with six.
Lead scorer for Sul Ross was Krista Ford, who finished with 18 points.
The Saints shot 45 percent from the field, 31 percent from 3-point range and 71 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Lobos shot 42 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range and 38 percent from the charity strip.
The Lady Saints will enjoy a week-long break before returning to the court on Nov. 28, when they open their conference schedule. Tip-off against Wiley College at home is 5:30 p.m.
