The Our Lady of the Lake men's soccer team overcame an early goal to come from behind and beat the University of Dallas Crusaders 3-1 Saturday at the OLLU soccer field.

The Saints began the match strong, but junior defender Eric Torkildsen was called for a foul five minutes into the game. The foul resulted in penalty kick to put the Saints down 1-0 early. Despite the dismal start, the Saints maintained their composure and pressed the attack for the majority of the first half.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 41st minute when junior defender Ricky Guerra sent a 35-yard cross into the heart of the Crusader penalty area. The cross deflected off a defender and slid past the sprawling goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1.

With the match tied to start the second half, the Saints pushed hard early and saw immediate results when freshman forward Yared Temesgen won the ball from a Crusader defender at the top of the penalty area and passed the ball to freshman midfielder Salim Sandoval. Sandoval collected the ball and released a 24-yard strike that deflected off the right goalpost and into the net, giving the Saints their first lead of the game 2-1. The Saints were back on the attack 20 minutes later when junior forward Tomas Flores made a 35-yard run to collect the ball from sophomore forward Ramon Rodriguez. Flores unleashed a shot from 18 yards out to beat the goalkeeper to the far post giving the Saints a 3-1 advantage.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marco Herrera recorded four saves for the game. The game marked the 12th time this year Herrera has allowed one or fewer goals. Rodriguez led all Saints with four shots and one assist. Flores and Torkildsen finished the game with two shots each. The Saints outshot the Crusaders 15-7.

The game marked the Saints last home game this season and served as a tune-up for the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament which starts Thursday. The Saints finished conference play in third place overall and will face the sixth-seeded Texas Wesley University in their opening match. The Saints defeated Texas Wesleyan 3-2 in double overtime Oct. 8.
