SAN ANTONIO (Jan, 16, 2012) Our Lady of the Lake University's junior guard Robert Martinez has surpassed 1,000 career points this season. Martinez, who entered the game against the University of St. Thomas on Dec. 30 with 993 points, scored 12 points to become the first member of the OLLU Saints men's basketball team's 1,000 Point Club with 1,005 total points scored. Martinez is currently at 1,081 points.

 

A native of Houston, Martinez played on the Chavez High School men's basketball team. He joined OLLU's Saints squad in 2009, when the University kicked off intercollegiate basketball. During the inaugural season, Martinez finished with 433 points, averaging 14.9 ppg. He made 143-of-311 field goals (46 percent), 74-of-82 from 3-point range (41.2 percent) and 72-of-88 from the free-throw line (82 percent). Martinez was named to the Red River Athletic Conference All-Conference Second Team and was the Saints second-leading scorer.

  
As a freshman, Robert Martinez averaged 15.7 ppg

In OLLU's second season, Martinez finished with 470 points, averaging 15.7 ppg. Last year, he made 152-of-385 field goals (40 percent), 93-of-250 3-pointers (37 percent) and 73-of-91 free throws (80 percent). In the season, Martinez ranked No. 8 in Division 1 in 3-point fgm./game (3.100) and No. 10 in total 3-point fgm./game (93). Martinez was named to the All-Conference First Team, and he made the NAIA All-America Team, as well. He was the team's leading scorer.


This year, after 16 games, Martinez has scored 178 points, averaging 12.7 ppg. He has made 57-of-145 field goals (39 percent), 39-of-107 3-pointers (36 percent) and 25-of-30 free throws (83 percent). So far this year, Martinez ranks first in conference play in 3-point fgm./game and in total 3-point fgm.  Despite being sidelined several games due to an injury, Martinez is the third leading scorer on the team.


Throughout his time at OLLU, Martinez has scored a career-high 38 points in his sophomore campaign against the University of the Southwest on Dec. 2, 2010. He made 14-of-24 field goals, 8-of-15 3-pointers and 8-of-8 free throws. Also during that game Martinez added 11 assists and five steals.  His highest score this year was 22 points against Texas Wesleyan University on Jan. 9.


OLLU is looking for its 11th consecutive win tonight as it faces conference opponent Bacone College with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Muskogee, Okla. Bacone is nine games behind the Saints in conference with a 1-9 record and 2-13 overall. The Saints are 4-0 in four previous matchups.
