SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 7, 2012) -- Ashley Hicks recorded her first double-double of the season and the second one of her career as she led the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team to a 106-69 win over Huston-Tillotson University (HTU).
The win moves the Saints to 18-5 overall and 13-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference. They are two-and-a-half games behind league-leaders Langston University (16-2/22-2) and LSU-Shreveport (16-2/18-6). Half-a-game behind the Saints is Texas Wesleyan University (12-4/17-5).
The Saints took a 6-0 lead with field goals from Jasmine Fuller, Alisha Crump and Chelsea Solis, and the game looked to be a runaway for the team. However, after five minutes had passed, the Saints saw their lead diminish as the Rams took over at 11-10. A 3-pointer from Chelsea Kellogg (pictured at right) put the Saints back on top at 13-11, but the Rams embarked on a 13-3 run to lead 23-16 at the 11-minute mark.
Crump got things back on track for the Saints after a fast-break play that scored her two points and sent her to the charity stripe. Within two minutes, the Saints were back on top after Stacey Darnley connected on a 3-pointer on an assist from Nikkia Davis. During the first part of the first half, the Saints had committed 10 turnovers, while forcing 11 on Huston-Tillotson. With five minutes remaining in the period, the Saints had forced an additional eight turnovers while giving up none to lead 52-31. A pair of 3-pointers from Arlene Cisneros gave the Saints the 58-35 lead as the teams headed for the locker room.
The Saints continued their dominance in the second half as they led by as much as 27 points with 10 minutes left in the game. Their largest lead was 40 points and the game ended with a 36-point win for the Saints at 105-69.
Fuller and Nashae Owens (pictured at left) scored 14 points and added four steals each. Hicks finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Solis, Darnley and Kellogg each scored 10 points, while Davis finished with 10 assists and three steals.
The Saints shot 42 percent from the field including 7-of-15 from 3-point range. Their shooting percentage from the free-throw line was 90 as they connected on 11-of-12. The team committed 23 turnovers while forcing 42. The team also finished with 33 offensive boards and 17 on defense.
Huston-Tillotson shot 47 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range and 71 percent from the free-throw line. The Rams' bench scored 23 points, while the Saints' bench contributed 59 points. Fifteen points off turnovers were scored by HTU, and 56 were scored by OLLU.
The Saints will host Paul Quinn College on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 5:30 p.m. In the teams' first matchup this season, the Saints won 73-54.
