The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints men's soccer team has advanced to the Red River Athletic Conference Championship game after beating No. 2 ranked Huston-Tillotson University. The game, played today at 1 p.m. at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, concluded after two double overtime periods and a penalty kick shootout that resulted in the Saints winning 1-1 (4-3 PKs).
The Saints, ranked no. 3 going into the tournament, will face the winner of today's game at 5 p.m. between no. 1-ranked University of Texas at Brownsville and no. 5-ranked Texas College. The championship game will be played on Nov. 7 at 5 p.m.
Starting for the Saints were Marco Herrera, Ramiro Ramirez, Ricky Guerra, Heriberto Salinas, Gary Hamilton, Ramon Rodriguez, Tomas Flores, Humberto Saenz, Eric Torkildsen, Jack Martinez and David Bazan, with substitutes Luis Mancilla, Esteban Rocha, Cesar Dominguez, Octavio Herrera, Salim Sandoval, Gerardo Marquez and D.J. Kagebein.
HTU scored first less than one minute left in the first half. OLLU's goal keeper Marco Herrera received a red card, and HTU's Abraham Bernal shot a penalty kick that went into the goal for the score. OLLU Head Coach Shane Hurley disputed the foul called and received a red card, as well.
Senior Kagebein came in as goal keeper for the Saints to start the second half. The score remained at 1-0 through the 80th minute when Flores scored on an assist by Marquez.
The game ended regulation play, and the teams entered into the first and second overtime period without scoring a point. The teams then began the penalty kick shootout with OLLU's Mancilla in as goal keeper. HTU's Cesar Silva, Erwin Madrid and Walter Madrid scored. For OLLU, Hamilton, Flores, Salinas and Rodriguez each put one through the post, giving the Saints the shootout win 4-3.
The Saints outscored HTU 6-3 in the first half and 13-10 in the second half and overtime periods. Leading the Saints in shots was Ramon Rodriguez with five, while Flores had two and Ramirez, Torkildsen and Herrera each had two. Marco Herrera recorded two saves and Kagebein had three.
