SAN ANTONIO (March 28, 2012) -- Matt Ellis from Our Lady of the Lake University has been named Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performances from March 19-25, 2012. In tennis, OLLU is unaffiliated and competes against schools from the Cascade, Frontier, MCAC and Sooner Athletic Conferences.


Ellis, a freshman from El Paso, Texas, helped his team to a 3-0 week defeating teams from Newman University, St. Mary's University and the University of the Incarnate Word.  He also led the team to its first-ever national ranking as announced earlier this week. The team is No. 21 in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

In Ellis' singles match on March 21, he beat Jared Ferris from Newman University 6-3 and 6-0. Paired up with Luis Rovira, Ellis defeated Evgenyi Kim and Jeff Wherritt 8-5 in the doubles match.

In the match against St. Mary's University on March 23, Ellis beat Marcin Marczewski 6-4 and 7-6. Along with Rovira, Ellis overpowered Nestor Morreno and Mateo Martinez 8-3 in the doubles match.
In the team's match against the University of the Incarnate Word, Ellis beat Luke Trautmann 6-2 and 7-5. He and Rovira defeated Trautmann and David Ballinger in the doubles match 8-6.
Ellis' individual season record is 8-2 in singles and 7-3 in doubles.
