SAN ANTONIO (May 31, 2012) The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) volleyball team has added nine student-athletes to its 2012 squad.

The Saints, now in their fifth year of competition, finished last season with a 7-2 conference record, and they made their fourth consecutive trip to the Red River Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.  

 

Joining the Saints this year from San Antonio are Shelby Aelvoet, Dishai Goodwyn and Stephanie Rubio.

Aelvoet, a 5'10" graduate of Warren High School, is a middle blocker/outside hitter. She also played club volleyball for SA Extreme. She received First-Team All-District Honors last season, and she was named All-Tourney in the Northside Independent School District 2011 Tournament. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Goodwyn is a 5'8" outside hitter from Harlandale High School. This past season, she was named to the All-Regional Team and received First-Team Honors. She also made the Harlandale Independent School District All-Tournament Team and the San Antonio Independent School District All-Tournament Team. She led the Lady Indians to a 33-10/10-2 record and the team finished as District 28-4A Runner Up and Bi-District Finalists.

Rubio is a graduate of John Jay High School, where she earned All-District honors her junior and senior years. She also received All-Tournament honors three years in a row. In addition, Rubio was named Offensive Player of the Year for her team. Rubio played on the San Antonio XTreme Volleyball Club, as well. She excelled in academics as she was named to the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.

Two athletes from La Vernia High School are also joining the Saints this season: Alexandria Cruz and Claire LaHue. Cruz is a 5'6" setter. She has played for the S.A. Force Club Team, as well. Her awards and accomplishments include: Team Captain, 2011 3A Setter of the Year, 2011 3A All-Area Team, 2011 3A All-Area MVP and 2011 All-State Team. LaHue is a 5'9" outside hitter. She was named to the District 28-3A All-District Second Team.

The Saints will add three players from the Rio Grande Valley – Laura Eberly, Mission; Sydney Herrera, Harlingen; and Gloriana Villarreal, Los Fresnos. Eberly is a 6'0" middle hitter, who played on the Sharyland High School squad. Herrera is a 5'11" middle blocker from South High School. Villarreal, a 5'8" outside hitter, attended Los Freshnos High School.

Joining the Saints from El Paso is Alysha Blanco, a 6'0" standout from Eastwood High School. Blanco also played for the 915 United Volleyball Club. She earned All-Tournament team honors at the 2011 Riverside Volleyball Tournament.

After a scrimmage tournament on Aug. 25 against Trinity University, St. Mary's University and the University of Incarnate Word, the Saints will travel to Texas A&M University – Kingsville on Aug. 31. OLLU will begin its conference schedule on Sept. 22 in New Mexico against the University of the Southwest.
