Terry Smith is the assistant coach for men's and women's cross-country and men's and women's track and field.
In 2017, the men finished in second place in outdoor, and Ricky Ramos qualified for the NAIA National Championship Meet, where he competed as a hurdler. Earning Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) All-Conference recognition were: Nathaniel Aguilar (1500m, 3k, 5k, 4x800mR), Derek Barnett (3k, 4x800mR), Adrian Carmona (4x100mR, 4x400mR), Anthony Gonzalez (3k, 4x800mR), Jose Lima (4x400mR, 4x800mR), Rene Perez (4x100mR, 4x400mR), Luis Ramirez (5k, 10k), Ricky Ramos (110mH, 400mH, 4x100mR), Tristen Robles (10k), Alex Sattley (High Jump, Long Jump), Patrick Torres (10k), Clayton Townsend (4x100mR) and Justin Ybarra (10k). RRAC Scholar Athletes were: Barnett, Carmona and Torres.
In 2016, the men's team finished third in the Red River Athletic Conference Championships, which OLLU hosted. Saints finishing in the top three of their events were as follows: Patrick Bousselot, 800m, 2nd place, 2:05.16; Steven Tomlin, Triple Jump, 2nd place, 13.46m; Luis Ramirez, 5k, 2nd place, 16:20.17; Patrick Torres, 10k, 2nd place, 36:23.97; Alex Sattley, High Jump, 2nd place, 1.98m; Luis Ramirez, 3k, 3rd place, 9:10.23; Alex Sattley, Long Jump, 3rd place, 6.46m; Alex Sattley, Triple Jump, 3rd place, 13.41m. In the men's track and field inaugural season in 2015, the Saints finished fifth in the Red River Athletic Conference. Individually, the Saints had one second-place, one third-place, one fifth-place and two six-place finishes in the conference meet. Throughout the season, three men were named conference runners of the week. In addition, 12 OLLU school records were set this season. Smith comes to OLLU from the University of the Incarnate Word (2012-2014), where as a graduate assistant/assistant coach, his areas were sprints, jumps and hurdles and his specified events were hurdles, strength and conditioning. In his first year at UIW, both the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams won conference titles and ran the NCAA Division II National Championship meet. Prior to UIW, Smith coached at McMurry University from 2011-2012. There, his areas were sprints, jumps and hurdles and his specified events were hurdles, strength and conditioning. He also was on the staff of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's National Track and Field Team Championship Team. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts in English from McMurry University. While there, he won multiple All-Conference awards from the American Southwest Conference. He also received the Sportsmanship Award in 2011 and the Top Track Athlete of the Year Award in 2011. He is an NCAA Division III five-time All-American and was on the National Championship Team in 2008. He set school records in the pentathlon and in the indoor 4x400 meter relay. He is a native of Crowell, Texas, where he was a five-sport letterman at Crowell High School. He was a Texas State bronze medalist in the 300-meter hurdles.
