ZACH LUEVANOS returns as an assistant coach for the Saints after spending one season with the team in 2017. He comes to OLLU after spending a year at the University of Texas as San Antonio (UTSA) as a volunteer coach. He spent the previous two seasons as a volunteer assistant for University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) baseball Head Coach Patrick Hallmark. While there, he was the camp coordinator, and he worked with hitters, catchers and outfielders. During his time with the UIW Cardinals, Luevanos worked with three players that earned Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors over two seasons. Outfielder Ridge Rogers earned a spot on the team after the 2018 campaign, after posting a .350 (72-for-206), 34 runs scored and driving in 34 runs. Catcher Taylor Smith hit .322 (49-for-208), including 16 home runs, 11 doubles and four triples with 42 runs scored and 35 RBIs, securing his spot on the 2019 team. Third baseman Antonio Valdez was named to the 2019 squad after posting a .302 average (65-for-215), including 14 doubles, six triples and four home runs, scoring 52 runs and driving in 31. Luevanos served as an assistant coach at OLLU in 2017, working with the offense and catchers. Three players on the team – Matt Beasley, Orlando Collado and Seth Garcia earned Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) All-Conference recognition. Shortstop Collado set several all-time records that still stand today. He is the all-time leader in batting average at .360 and is third all-time in doubles with 24. He has the best slugging percentage at .610. Third baseman Beasley also had a third all-time record of 24 doubles and all-time record of triples with six. Garcia, a catcher, is fifth in a season in putouts with 271.
After serving as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Lamar, in 2013, Luevanos turned his focus to management and training. He served as the Director of Baseball Operations for two baseball training facilities in Beaumont, Texas, from 2014-2016. The two-time All-South Texas and one-time All-State performer at Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, hit .448 as a senior and .420 as a junior. Luevanos began his collegiate career at NJCAA Seminole State College in Oklahoma, where he earned All-Region honors both seasons. As a redshirt freshman in 2010, he registered a .387 batting average with 13 doubles and 12 home runs, scoring 24 runs and driving in 41. In 2011, he posted a .343 batting average with 17 doubles and five home runs, with 40 runs scored and 52 RBIs. Luevanos transferred to NCAA D1 Lamar University for his final two seasons, where he was a .264 (62-for-235) hitter, with 21 runs scored and 36 RBIs. As a senior, he garnered All-Southland Conference honors after posting a .267 (40-for-150) average, with seven doubles, 14 runs scored and 22 RBIs in 48 games. His cousins, Tony and Rudy Jaramillo are former MLB hitting coaches.
