


KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (Nov. 24, 2012) -- Alisha Crump recorded her sixth career double-double to lead the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team to its fifth consecutive win. The Saints came back after trailing in the first half to beat NCAA Division II Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) 61-51 during the final day of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints continue their winning streak to an undefeated 5-0 record, while TAMIU drops to 2-4 on the season.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, "Our good defense overcame a horrific shooting first half. Again, we continue to find a way to win against teams who are supposed to beat us. We just need to continue to improve daily."
OLLU fell behind quickly to begin the first half with the Dustdevils taking an 18-4 lead, but Crump kick started a 6-0 run to trail 18-10. With four minutes remaining in the half, a shot from Nikkia Davis launched an 8-0 run that closed out the half with the Saints trailing 22-24.
A jumper from Crump tied the score at 24 to begin the second half, and the teams would tie three more times before the Saints took over the lead for the remaining minutes in the game. The Saints took their biggest lead of the game at the buzzer with the 61-51 win.
The Saints shot 29 percent from the field making 18-of-63 shots compared to the Dustdevils who shot 41 percent, connecting on 21-of-51 field goals. OLLU made 2-of-16 3-pointers (12 percent) and 23-of-33 free throws (70 percent), while TAMIU made 3-of-17 3-pointers (18 percent) and 6-of-9 free throws (67 percent). The Saints forced 34 turnovers resulting in 28 points, while giving the ball up 17 times.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Crump was named to the All-Tournament Team. She finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, along with six steals. Davis also scored in double digits for the Saints with 14 points, and she added five assists and four steals.
TAMIU's Kim Brown also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Also as part of the Thanksgiving Classic Tournament, the OLLU reserves team played Texas A&M University – Kingsville on Friday and lost 60-78. The game does not count against the Saints record.
Freshman Lauren Rubio (pictured at right) led the Saints in scoring with 21 points, and she added eight rebounds, eight steals and two assists. Junior Sequestiny O'Neal scored 16 points and she added four steals, seven rebounds and two assists. Freshman Alyssa Browne added 14 points for the Saints. The team shot 33 percent from the field including 12 percent from 3-point range and 61 percent from the free-throw line. The Saints gave the ball up 25 times and forced 24 turnovers.
The Saints will continue their preseason on Monday when they visit Lamar University in Beaumont. OLLU played Lamar, an NCAA Division I school, last season in an exhibition game and lost 62-82.
