SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 7, 2015) – Starting pitchers Chance Smith and David Marte (JR/Boston, Mass.) guided the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team to its first wins of the inaugural season Saturday afternoon. The Saints defeated the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) 5-4 and 3-1 to move to 2-2 on the season, while UHV is also at 2-2.
Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, "Chase Smith (SO/La Porte, Texas) and David Marte gave us two quality starts on the mound today. We battled all day and came up with timely hits in both games – that was the difference today. It felt great to get our first win in school history. The guys wanted it today."
After two uneventful innings that garnered one hit each for both teams, Smith walked catcher Matthew Herrera, and Emilio Semas came in to pinch run. A ground out from first baseman Kyle Bludau gave Semas the opportunity to score the game's first run.
In the fourth inning, designated hitter Dylan Bates scored on a single from Joshua Boothe to give the Jaguars the 2-0 lead.
Saints left fielder Connor Kalisky (SO/San Antonio, Texas) walked to start the bottom of the fourth. Right fielder Adam Jimenez (SO/Waco, Texas) hit to left, and center fielder Enrique Ruiz III (FR/Helotes, Texas)'s sacrifice bunt advanced the two base runners. The Jaguars sent in Nathan Falkenstine to replace Grant Westmoreland on the mound. Pinch hitter Charles Evans then stepped up to bat for third baseman Ivan Herrera (FR/Edinburg, Texas) and singled to right, and Kalisky scored. Stephen Garcia (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.), pinch hitting for catcher Laiky Uribe (JR/Bronx, N.Y.), singled to center to drive in Jimenez, and a shot to left field by designated hitter Joshua Razo (JR/Pearland, Texas) sent Evans and Garcia home to give the Saints the 4-2 lead.
Herrera hit to left in the bottom of the fifth inning to move the Saints to 5-2. The Jaguars came back to open the sixth inning with two runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Saints' lead.
Smith pitched five innings allowing five hits and three runs, while walking three and striking out four. Nicholas Campos (FR/Humble, Texas) relieved Smith in the sixth inning for the save and allowed three hits and one run while striking out one.
Losing pitcher Falkenstine allowed six hits and three runs.
Kalisky led the Saints on offense with two runs. Razo and Jimenez each got two hits, with Razo logging two RBIs.
UHV's Bates led his team with two runs and one hit, and third baseman Cole Urban finished with three hits.
David Marte opened the second game on the mound for the Saints. The game remained scoreless through the bottom of the fourth inning, when Razo reached the base on a walk. Kalisky doubled, and right fielder Dante Vigiletti (JR/Corona, Calif.) went to first on an error by UHV's third baseman Joshua Ledesma. Razo scored to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
The Jaguars came back in the fifth to tie the score on a run by center fielder Robert Zaragoza.
A double by Razo opened the bottom of the sixth inning, and first baseman Jake Simmons (SO/La Porte, Texas) reached base on an error by Falkenstine. Johnny Guerrero (FR/Fort Worth, Texas) subbed in to run for Simmons. Kalisky snapped the 1-1 tie with a triple to send both Razo and Guerrero home. The RBIs resulted in the game-winner for the Saints.
Marte pitched a complete game allowing three hits and one run, while striking out three and walking one.
Falkenstine earned the loss after allowing two hits and two runs for the Jaguars.
Kalisky once again led the Saints on offense with two hits and two RBIs. Razo also scored two runs and recorded one RBI.
The Saints will return to Missions Baseball Academy on Friday, Feb. 13, to host Texas A&M International University. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
