SAN ANTONIO (March 11, 2015) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team stunned the Trinity University Tigers Wednesday evening with a 7-4 win snapping the NCAA D3 school's 15-game home win streak.The Saints have now beaten NCAA D1 (Prairie View A&M University), D2 (Texas A&M International University) and D3 schools in their inaugural season so far.
The win moves the Saints to 9-9 on the season, while Trinity now stands at 12-3 overall.
Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, "Tonight was a big win for us going into this weekend. We wanted to continue to play well and we accomplished that. We were able to get in scoring position, drive in runs and get those timely hits when it mattered -- that was huge for us. Now we need to get focused and ready for the University of the Southwest."
The Saints jumped ahead in the first inning after a grounder from Joshua Razo (JR/Pearland, Texas) sent Enrique Ruiz III (FR/Helotes, Texas) home. With Chase Smith (SO/La Porte, Texas) on the mound for the Saints, Trinity's Colin Serkowski hit a double to right field and Brody Fehmel went home to tie the game at 1-1.
The second inning stayed scoreless. In the top of the third, Darius Patton (SO/San Antonio, Texas) walked, and a ground out from Ruiz gave Patton the opportunity to score to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.
Anthony De Jesus (JR/Sugarland, Texas) singled in the fourth inning for the Saints, and he subsequently stole second and third. After Leudy Betancourt (JR/Danbury, Conn.) walked, Austin Gallego (JR/Bryan, Texas) grounded out into a double play, but De Jesus was able to score a run to give the Saints the 3-1 lead.
Gallego had an RBI in the sixth inning after he singled and drove in De Jesus for the Saints fourth run. Trinity closed out the inning with a run from Fehmel to take the game to 4-2.
In the eighth inning, De Jesus tripled to left field and sent pinch hitter Chance Evans (FR/Cleveland, Texas) home. Betancourt reached base on a fielder's choice, and De Jesus scored on a throwing error. The Saints took the 6-2 lead.
Trinity's Connor Moore walked in the bottom of the eighth and subsequently scored on a wild pitch to take the game to 6-3.
Connor Kalisky (SO/San Antonio, Texas) flied out in the top of the ninth, and Ruiz ran home for the Saints seventh run. Trinity's Moore came back in the bottom of the ninth to hit a single to left, sending Jose Santos home. The game ended soon after with the Saints winning 7-4.
Smith earned the win for the Saints after he pitched three innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out two and walking three. Jordan Seifert (FR/Houston, Texas) also pitched three innings, and he allowed three hits and one run while walking one. Rick Garcia Jr. (FR/Katy, Texas) pitched two innings and allowed one run while walking one and striking out two. Nicholas Campos (FR/Humble, Texas) closed out the game after pitching one inning, allowing one hit and one run, while walking two.
Trinity's Teddy Turner suffered the loss after he allowed one hit and three runs.
De Jesus led the Saints' offense after going 3-for-3.
The Saints will return home on Friday and Saturday to host the University of the Southwest for two doubleheaders. On Friday, the Saints play at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on Saturday, they play at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
