With OLLU's David Marte (JR/Boston, Mass.) on the mound, the Mustangs kicked off a rally in the first inning scoring four runs. Trey Alcachupas connected on a hit to right field, and Osvaldo Marin and Bryan Hernandez reached first base on a walk to load the bases. A double from Anthony Boyle sent Alcachupas and Hernandez home. A double from Brandon Slate sent pinch runner Danny Rodriguez home, and another double from Brandon Slate sent Rodriguez and Boyle home to give the Mustangs the 4-0 lead.
The Saints were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning after a hit from Darius Patton (SO/San Antonio, Texas). Another hit from Tyler Davis (JR/Weatherford, Texas) got him to base. Anthony De Jesus (JR/Sugarland, Texas) grounded out to short stop, but Patton was able to score to take the game to 6-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, a double from Leudy Betancourt (JR/Danbury, Conn.) followed by a single from Adam Jimenez (SO/Waco, Texas) send Betancourt home to move the game to 6-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Saints put on a valiant effort to win the game. Davis started things off for the Saints with a hit. Razo hit a double, and a single from Connor Kalisky delivered Davis home. With the bases full, a walk from Chance Evans (FR/Cleveland, Texas), a hit by the pitcher on Betancourt sent Joshua Razo (JR/Pearland, Texas) home. Another hit by the pitcher, this time on Adam Jimenez, sent Kalisky home. After taking the game to 6-5, the Saints were not able to score any more runs, and the game ended with the loss.
Marte suffered the loss after pitching four innings, allowing five hits and six runs, while walking four and striking out one. Carlos Becera pitched three innings and allowed one hit while walking one and striking out six.
Davis led the way on offense for the Saints going 3-for-4. Jimenez recorded two RBIs for the Saints.
Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, "We had our chances and couldn't drive in runs early in the game. We left too many runners on base and in scoring position. We fell behind four runs in the first inning and had to fight back from there. We did give ourselves a chance in the seventh inning as we started to get something going, but we just couldn't get one more hit to tie the game with the tying run at third and the winning run at second."
Chace Smith took the mound for the Saints in the second game and held the Mustangs scoreless six innings.
The Mustangs recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the third inning after Andrew Montoya hit a single to left field, but Evans was able to keep them in check through the end of the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Saints exploded with six runs on seven hits. Davis started things off for OLLU after he hit a single to left field. Razo followed with another hit nearby. Anthony De Jesus hit a sacrifice fly out to score Davis. Kalisky's single to center field sent Razo home. A hit to right field from Evans gave Kalisky the go ahead to score. Jimenez doubled to left field and another double from Austin Gallego (JR/Bryan, Texas) scored Evans and Jimenez. Patton hit the innings' third double to score Gallego to give the Saints the 6-0 lead.
The Saints rallied again in the fifth inning with four more runs added. Razo opened the inning with a walk, and De Jesus reached base on a bunt. A hit from Evans sent Razo home. Jimenez hit the ball to center field to direct De Jesus to home plate. Patton hit a single to left field and both Evans and Jimenez scored. The inning ended with the Saints leading 10-0.
Smith kept the Mustangs scoreless in the sixth, and the Saints returned on offense to close out the inning with three more runs. This time, Laiky Uribe started the rally with a hit to right field. A double from Evans, a walk from Nicolas Casas (FR/San Antonio, Texas) and a hit by the pitcher on Jimenez filled the bases. Uribe was sent home, and a hit over the second baseman from Ivan Herrera (FR/Edinburg, Texas) sent Evans and Casas home. The inning ended with the Saints leading 13-0.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, a hit from USW's Danny Rodriguez gave Ean Smith the opportunity to score the Mustangs' first and only run of the game.
The game ended with the Saints winning 13-1.
Smith pitched all seven innings for the Saints allowing five hits and one run while walking two and striking out four.
Evans led the way on offense for the Saints after going 3-for 4, scoring three runs and recording two RBIs.
Rodriguez concluded, "We woke the bats up and that was good to see. We out-hit them in both games and got aggressive in our counts. The way we were able to get it going with the run output is what we need moving forward. Chase pitched a great game, and we responded with some solid at-bats. We need to continue to work hard and build from this game."
The Saints will play a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, March 17, against Southwestern Assemblies of God University. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.
