VICTORIA, TEXAS (March 30, 2015) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) suffered four losses to the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) over the weekend. On Saturday, the Saints lost 3-1 and 13-0 and on Sunday, 12-2 and 11-7.
The Saints drop to 12-18-1 overall and remain 7-5 in the Red River Athletic Conference. UHV improves to 21-13 on the season.
Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, "We had a rough weekend. We just couldn't do anything right. We need to turn the page and get ready for Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday and a huge conference series against Jarvis this weekend."
In the first game against the Jaguars, the Saints added the first run to the scoreboard when Anthony De Jesus (JR/Sugarland, Texas) homered in the fourth inning. UHV came back in the sixth inning to score three runs.
Jordan Hackett (FR/San Antonio, Texas) suffered the 3-1 game-one loss after pitching 5.2 innings. He allowed four hits on three runs, while walking one and striking out four in 22 at bats. Max Cunningham (FR/Grand Prairie, Texas) faced one batter to close out the game.
The Saints recorded no runs in the second game against the Jaguars. Adam Jimenez (SO/Waco, Texas), Austin Gallego (JR/Bryan, Texas) and Darius Patton (SO/San Antonio, Texas) registered the only hits of the game for OLLU. John Garcia (FR/Victoria, Texas) started on the mound and pitched two innings, allowing six runs and four hits while striking out two and walking four in nine at bats. Carlos Becerra (SO/San Antonio, Texas) came in to pitch two innings, and he allowed five runs and three hits while walking two in seven at bats. Rick Garcia Jr. (FR/Katy, Texas) pitched one inning and allowed two runs and two hits, and Chad Leatherwood (FR/La Porte, Texas) closed out the 13-0 loss after pitching one inning. He struck out two and walked one, while allowing no runs or hits.
In Saturday's first game, UHV scored a run in the first inning, and OLLU's Connor Kalisky (SO/San Antonio, Texas) doubled to reach base in the second inning. Dante Vigiletti (JR/Corona, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to send Kalisky home to tie the game at 1-1.
The Jaguars scored two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to take the game to 6-1. After Enrique Ruiz III (FR/Helotes, Texas) reached base on a walk, a double from Gallego sent him home to move the game to 6-2.
UHV's bats were on fire as they scored six more runs in the fifth inning. The game remained scoreless through two innings, and the Jaguars won 12-2.
Chase Smith (SO/La Porte, Texas) suffered the loss for the Saints after pitching three innings, allowing four runs and four hits while striking out one and walking three in 12 at bats. Jordan Seifert (FR/Houston, Texas) allowed six runs and seven hits, while striking out two in 12 at bats. Max Cunningham closed out the game for the Saints and allowed two runs and two hits in six at bats.
In the final game of the series, the Saints put the first run on the scoreboard in the second inning. Leudy Betancourt (JR/Danbury, Conn.) doubled to left, and a hit from Joshua Razo (JR/Pearland, Texas) sent Betancourt home to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
The Jaguars turned up the heat again as they scored four runs in the third inning to take the 4-1 lead. They added four more runs in the fourth inning.
The Saints showed potential in the sixth inning after scoring three runs. Tyler Davis (JR/Weatherford, Texas) reached first on a single, and Stephen Garcia (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) singled to right. Chance Evans (FR/Cleveland, Texas) got to first on a wild throw by pitcher Collin Schaaf, and both Davis and Garcia scored. Vigiletti replaced Evans on base, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Betancourt. The game moved to 8-4 in favor of the Jaguars.
UHV scored in the sixth inning and took the 9-4 lead. The Saints made another attempt to take the lead in the seventh inning. Gallego reached first, and Davis singled to send Gallego home. A double from Evans scored Davis and Garcia, and the game moved to 9-7.
The Jaguars scored a run in the seventh and in the eighth to close out the game with the 11-7 win.
OLLU's David Marte (JR/Boston, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Saints after pitching three innings allowing four runs and three hits, while striking out two and walking two in 12 at bats. Rick Garcia Jr. pitched two innings and allowed four runs and three hits while striking out one and walking one in 10 at bats. Leatherwood faced eight batters and allowed three hits and three runs, while striking out two and walking three. Nicholas Campos (FR/Humble, Texas) closed out the game allowing one hit after facing two batters.
Evans led the Saints offense with two RBIs. Both Davis and Razo went 2-for-4.
The Saints next game will take place on Tuesday, March 31, against Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. The game will start at 7 p.m.
