SAN ANTONIO (April 14, 2015) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) completed its season sweep of NCAA D3 Trinity University this evening with a 2-1 win. The Saints beat the Tigers earlier this season 7-4.
The win moves the Saints to 18-23-1 overall, while the No. 15-ranked Tigers drop to 22-10.
Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, "Tonight was a great win for our ball club. Our pitching staff did an outstanding job locating pitches, pounding the zone, throwing strikes and trusting in their defense. We wanted every pitcher to concentrate and win their inning and they all did. Offensively, we were able to get that big hit with two outs in the fourth inning to untie the game. Joshua Razo and Dante Vigiletti (JR/Corona, Calif.) got it started and Austin Gallego (JR/Bryan, Texas) came up with the big RBI single to put us up. I knew that run was huge and had confidence that we would hold that lead. I am so proud of my team and my coaching staff for all the hard work they put in preparing for every game. They played hard tonight and we got a huge win for our program. Now we must go back to work and prepare for Texas College."
The Saints used nine pitchers this evening, starting out with Chase Smith (SO/La Porte, Texas). With Chad Leatherwood (FR/La Porte, Texas) on the mound in the second inning, Trinity scored its only run. Nicholas Jewett reached first after a Saints' error. Carter McEachern's double sent Jewett home to give Trinity the 1-0 lead.
The Saints quickly tied the game in the bottom of the second. Leudy Betancourt (JR/Danbury, Conn.) started the rally after he doubled to left field. Dante Vigiletti grounded, and Betancourt reached home plate to move the game to 1-1.
Jordan Seifert (FR/Houston, Texas) was next up to pitch for the Saints and he got all three batters out. Carlos Becerra (SO/San Antonio, Texas) had a successful fourth inning on the mound as well, allowing no hits.
Joshua Razo (JR/Pearland, Texas) singled to center in the fourth inning, and a hit from Gallego sent Razo home to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.
Jordan Hackett (FR/San Antonio, Texas), Rick Garcia Jr. (FR/Katy, Texas), Nicholas Campos (FR/Humble, Texas), Max Cunningham (FR/Grand Prairie, Texas) and John Garcia (FR/Victoria, Texas) pitched one inning each and none allowed any hits or walks to guide the Saints to the win.
Becerra earned the win for the Saints.
Emanuel Sanchez (JR/Catano, Puerto Rico), Evans, Betancourt, Razo, Vigiletti and Gallego each recorded a hit for the Saints.
The Saints will return to their conference schedule this weekend when they travel to Tyler, Texas, to play Texas College on April 17-18. Both doubleheaders begin at 12 p.m.
