HOBBS, N.M. (Nov. 8, 2015) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team was eliminated in the first round of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament after being on the short end of a penalty kick shootout against the University of the Southwest (USW) Sunday afternoon. Saints and Mustangs played to a 0-0 draw in regulation. Neither team was able to grab a winner in the overtime periods, and the final spot in the tournament semifinals was decided from the penalty spot with the Mustangs advancing by a score of 4-3.
USW controlled the pace of the game creating more opportunities in the game. Saints goalkeeper Igor Nunes do Nascimento (JR/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was forced to make seven saves in the contest to keep a clean sheet. OLLU was held to only four shots in the game, none of which were on target.
After four scoreless periods, the game had to be decided from the penalty spot. USW's Edrian Negrete missed the first penalty in the shootout, but the Saints were unable to capitalize on the miss as Angel De la Garza (JR/Brownsville, Texas) also missed his penalty kick.
Scoring for the Mustangs were Gabriel Chacon, Jorge Orona, Edgar Negrete, and Jimmy Lara.
Giovani Sierra (SR/Brownsville, Texas), Jorge Cantu (SR/Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, Mexico) and Sergio Gonzalez (SR/Paramount, Calif.) all scored for the Saints. Jose De la Garza (SR/Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, Mex) was the last penalty kick taker for OLLU, but missed his chance to draw the Saints level and sent the Mustangs through to the semifinals.
With the result, the season has ended for the Saints.
