SAN ANTONIO (March 29, 2016) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team won the first game of a nonconference doubleheader against Trinity University (TU) Wednesday evening. The Saints defeated the Tigers 6-5 in the opener and dropped game two 5-4. OLLU now sits at 19-9 on the year while TU holds a 20-8 record.
Head Coach James Kling said, "I was glad to get a split with a good NCAA Division III team. We need to get consistent pitching and defense to be competitive against Houston-Tillotosn. We will work on that this week."
GAME ONE:
The Saints took the lead in the top of the third inning. Brooke Vasquez (SO/Buda, Texas) started the inning reaching base on a walk. Marissa Medina (JR/El Paso, Texas) advanced Vasquez with a sacrifice bunt. Brittany Martinez (JR/El Paso, Texas) drove Vasquez with base hit down the left field line for the 1-0 lead.
OLLU added two runs in the fifth taking advantage of some Tigers miscues. Alexis Macias (SO/San Antonio, Texas) recorded a base hit to center field and advanced to second on a throwing error. Ina Trejo (FR/Mission, Texas) advanced Macias to third with an infield hit. Both runners plated runs on Medina's at bat as she reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Rylie Goldwait.
The Tigers responded in the bottom half of the inning with five hits and four runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Kimberly Chaves (SO/Mission, Texas) tied the game in the top of the sixth. She started the inning with a single up the middle. Macias advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Vasquez drove Chaves home with a single to left-center field to make it 4-4. Trejo walked and was driven in by Medina with a hit to right-center field. Elizabeth Rodriguez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) recorded the last RBI for the Saints with a single to score Vasquez.
TU attempted to come back in the final inning, but only managed to score one run as the Saints held on for the 6-5 final.
Lauren Garza (SO/McAllen, Texas) was credited with the win in the pitching circle. She pitched two and one third innings allowing one hit and one run, while walking one. Cheyanne Carter (SO/Hempstead, Texas) started for the Saints and pitched through four and two thirds innings allowing seven hits and four runs.
TU's Kaci Wellik suffered the loss. She pitched five and two thirds innings allowing nine hits and all six runs.
GAME TWO:
TU opened up the scoring in the second game. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on four hits.
The Saints were held scoreless through the first two innings but drew level in the top of the third. Ina Trejo and Brooke Vasquez provided a spark for the Saints with back-to-back singles. Elizabeth Rodriguez hit a two-RBI double to plate both runners. Rodriguez made the game 3-3 taking advantage of a throwing error to cross home plate.
Despite the big inning by the Saints, the Tigers regained the lead in the bottom half of the third. Stephanie Crumrie hit a two-RBI single to right center field to score Devon Potter and Marisa Treviño to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
Rodriguez brought the Saints to within one. She singled up the middle and scored on a triple by Taylor Doege (SO/San Antonio, Texas) to make the score 5-4. Both teams held each other scoreless in the final two innings.
Taylor Doege suffered the loss after two and two thirds innings. She allowed three hits and two runs. Lauren Garza and Cheyanne Carter also saw action in the pitching circle for OLLU.
TU's Katie Castillon was the winner after pitching a complete game.
UP NEXT:
The Saints will return to Red River Athletic Conference competition with a four-game series against Huston-Tillotson University April 2-3.
