SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 29, 2016) – Hugo Plascencia (JR/San Antonio, Texas) scored the only goal of the game giving the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team the 1-0 win over the University of the Southwest (USW) Mustangs.
The win moves the Saints to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference. Southwest suffered its first loss of its season and drops to 5-1-1 and 0-1 in conference.
History
OLLU has won nine of 13 games against Southwest since 2007. The Saints' biggest win came in 2014, when they beat the Mustangs 5-1.
Scoring summary
The teams closed out the first half scoreless. Nevertheless, the Saints had eight opportunities to score in the first half, while the Mustangs took just one shot.
Hugo Plascencia found the back of the net at the 67th minute to give the Saints the win.
Standouts
Angel De la Garza (SR/Brownsville, Texas) led the Saints in shooting with three. Plascencia shot two, both on goal.
Southwest's Fernando Arellano shot two for his team, one on goal.
Overall, the Saints outshot the Mustangs 15-7.
Saints' starting keeper Jorge Cavazos (SO/McAllen, Texas) saved five and is credited with the shutout win. Humberto Estrada saved five for USW.
What's next
The Saints will return to their home field on Saturday in a nonconference game against Paul Quinn College at 3 p.m.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. All other home games are free and open to the public.
