SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 14, 2017) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints women's basketball team defeated the Paul Quinn College (PQC) Tigers 99-56 in a nonconference game.
With the win, the No. 22-ranked Saints improved to 12-6 on the season and will resume Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play next week with a 7-0 conference record. The Tigers dropped to 4-12 this season.
Alyssa Ward (SR/Palmeto, Fla.) led four OLLU players in double figures, scoring 18 points and recording five steals for the Saints. Kierra Clines was the lone PQC player in double figures with 14 points and four assists.
The Saints' defense was aggressive all night, wearing out the Tigers and forcing 35 turnovers, including 25 steals. OLLU leveraged its depth to great effect, coming at Paul Quinn with wave after wave of fresh players, getting 54 points off the bench compared to just 20 from the Tigers' second unit. As the game wore on, the press started generating more points, as the Saints held a 42-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
In addition to Ward's 18 points, Francesca Patrick (JR/Killeen, Texas) scored a season-high 17 points on an efficient 7-for-12 shooting to go with three steals. Whitney Sandmann (JR/Bentonville, Ark.) scored 13 points and four rebounds and Kasey Saldana (FR/San Antonio, Texas) scored 12 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the free-throw line, and contributing five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Alexis Johnson had nine points, seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals for the Tigers, but turned it over seven times. Courtney Carter scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench before fouling out.
The Saints will hit the road when they resume RRAC play next week, facing LSU-Shreveport on Friday, Jan. 20. The Saints lead the all-time series 12-6. On Saturday, Jan. 21, OLLU will face LSU-Alexandria, owning a 4-0 record all-time against the Generals.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
