KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (March 7, 2017) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team struggled on the road, losing 0-10 to the NCAA Division II Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) Javelinas in eight innings.
The Saints managed just two hits in the shutout loss while giving up 16 hits and committing four errors to fall to 8-12 on the season. The Javelinas remain undefeated at 11-0.
"We were unable to put anything together offensively, they were the better team today and we didn't respond to an early deficit," said Head Coach Jeremy Flores. "We have to get back to work and gear up for another big conference series this weekend."
TAMUK scored five quick runs off OLLU starting pitcher Caleb Mireles (JR/Del Rio, Texas), leading off with a walk and a single, then getting an RBI from Dallas Stefano with a second run scored on a throwing error. In the second inning, Mireles gave up a two-out, three-RBI double to left center from Hunter Perkins for a 5-0 lead. Tony Esparza (FR/Spring, Texas) entered in relief of Mireles after two more walks loaded the bases and promptly induced a ground out to end the inning.
The Javalinas picked up two more runs in the third inning; scoring one run on a passed ball and the other on an RBI single from Joshua Croft to leftfield before Oigres Garcia (JR/Laredo, Texas) replaced Esparza to retire the side. After another scoreless inning from Garcia, Caden Jacinto (SR/Italy, Texas) replaced him to start the fifth inning, holding TAMUK scoreless for two innings before walking in a run in the seventh.
Back-to-back RBI hits from Travis Geiser and Alec Kana triggered the 10-run rule in the eighth inning, ending the game.
Seven different TAMUK pitchers took the mound, holding OLLU to two hits while getting an errorless performance from its defense and striking out nine batters. Matt Mihalov (SO/Houston, Texas) (1-for-4) and Matt Beasley (SR/Burleson, Texas) (1-for-2) had the only hits for the Saints.
The Saints will resume conference play on March 10-11 with a three-game series against the Huston-Tillotson University Rams in Austin, Texas. The series begins Friday at 4 p.m., then concludes the next day with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. OLLU leads the all-time series 7-0.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public
