AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 12, 2017) – Inclement weather cut short another conference series, leaving the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team and the Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) Rams with a split 1-1 series.
In Friday's doubleheader, the Saints got out to a quick start in the first game for a 10-5 win; but struggled to string together enough hits in the second game, falling 2-7 for the first loss to HTU in the history of the program.
OLLU is now 9-12 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. HTU is 6-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Game One
The Saints started the game with a four-run first inning, batting through eight of the nine hitters in the lineup. Darius Patton (SR/San Antonio, Texas) reached on a walk, followed by a Matt Mihalov (SO/Houston, Texas) single. Matt Beasley (SR/Burleson, Texas) then knocked both in with a RBI-double to right-center.
Two outs later, Jose Diaz (FR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) reached on a walk. Seth Garcia (JR/San Antonio, Texas) then knocked Beasley in with a single to center, with Diaz scoring on a throwing error on the same play.
Jordan Hackett (JR/San Antonio, Texas) started for OLLU, facing six batters in the first inning and striking out three. For the game, Hackett pitched four shutout innings, facing 17 batters while striking out eight and giving up only five hits.
OLLU picked up two more runs in the second, scoring Russell Brown (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and Mihalov on an Orlando Collado (SR/Bronx, N.Y.) double to left. Sammy Sauceda (FR/Deer Park, Texas) scored on a fielder's choice from Mihalov in the third inning and Collado scored on a Diaz single in the fourth.
Three relief pitchers took the mound for the Saints, surrendering one run in the fifth inning and four in the sixth. Joey Baker (FR/Cuero, Texas) pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Jesus Ramirez (SO/Quitman, Texas) gave up three runs, with only one earned, facing four batters. Chase Smith (SR/La Porte, Texas) pitched an inning and retired all three batters he faced, picking up the save.
Mihalov batted 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Beasley went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run. Collado also had two RBIs. The Saints scored their 10 runs on nine hits. Both teams combined for 15 errors.
Game Two
OLLU put together eight hits in the second game, but only scored two runs, leaving 12 baserunners stranded in the 2-7 loss.
Brandon Cogbill (SR/Lake Dallas, Texas) got the start for OLLU, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up six earned runs on eight hits while striking out five. Mihalov continued his strong play from the first game, finishing 3-for-5 while Beasley (1-for-4) and Diaz (2-for-4) had the Saints' two RBIs.
HTU scored four runs on three hits in the third inning, batting through the entire lineup. Justin Haywood led the inning off with a single, followed by an Ajani Dowdy RBI-double to left. Dowdy then scored on a RBI from Adrian Buruato. The Rams' next two runs came with two outs.
The Rams scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh, with Caden Jacinto (SR/Italy, Texas) relieving Cogbill after the first two runs and giving up one more before retiring the side.
OLLU had a run each in the eighth and ninth inning, getting a RBI single from Diaz to score Beasley, followed by a sacrifice fly from Beasley in the ninth that was caught near the leftfield fence with the bases loaded.
What's next
The Saints take a break from conference play for a doubleheader against the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) at home on Tuesday, March 14, starting at noon. OLLU is 1-2-1 all-time against SAGU.
OLLU will then resume conference play on the road against Texas A&M University-Texarkana with a three-game series from March 17-18. The doubleheader will occur on the second day. The Saints lead the all-time series 3-2.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
