WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS (March 23, 2017) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball swept the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions 4-0 and 4-0 in a nonconference doubleheader.
The wins improve the Saints record to 10-16 overall, while the Lions drop to 9-21. The Saints have never lost to the Lions in eight previous matchups.
Head Coach James Kling commented, "We had a good day today winning two games on the road. We now have a quick turnaround and have to get ready for two conference games tomorrow morning."
Game one
Taylor Doege (JR/San Antonio, Texas) started the game with a hit, but two were left on base to end the top of the first inning for the Saints. Despite two Saints errors to close out the inning, the Lions were not able to add runs to the scoreboard.
In the second inning, Destiny Vega (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) singled to reach base, and Brooke Vasquez (JR/Buda, Texas) hit to third. Brittany Martinez (SR/El Paso, Texas) and Kristina Tiffany (SO/San Antonio, Texas) followed with singles, sending Vega home. Martinez also came home on on a fielder's choice. Doege came back up to bat and singled to left field, sending Tiffany home to give the Saints the 3-0 lead.
Vega started the sixth inning with a hit to left, and Jazzlynn Robles (FR/Santa Rosa, Texas) came in to run for Vegas. Lauren Garza (JR/McAllen, Texas) reached base on an error by SAGU's Kayla Milstead, sending Robles home.
The game remained 4-0 through the end of the competition.
Doege led the Saints going 3-3, adding one RBI. Tiffany went 1-3, adding one run and one RBI.
Vega and Garza combined for a no-hitter. Vega started on the mound going five innings, while striking out three and earning the win. Garza pitched two innings and also struck out three.
SAGU's Hannah Lee went seven innings, allowing nine hits and four runs, suffering the loss.
Game two
Amanda Sanchez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) was first to reach base in the second inning on a walk. Jana Arena (JR/Sugar Land, Texas) followed with a walk, and Martinez got to base on an error by SAGU's Kaili Williams. Sanchez scored on the error. Arena stole home to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.
With the bases full in the fourth inning, Sanchez scored after Tiffany walked and the Saints took a 3-0 lead.
Doege got to first in the seventh inning. Vega reached first on another error by Williams, and Doege came home to score. The game ended with the Saints winning 4-0.
Doege led the Saints going 2-4, adding one run. Sanchez went 1-3, scoring two runs. Arena went 1-2 and added one run.
Destinee Vindiola, Kayla Milstead and Brittany Livingston each had one hit for SAGU.
Garza earned the win after pitching four innings, allowing two hits. Doege pitched two innings and allowed one hit while striking out two. Erika Diaz (FR/Alice, Texas) closed out the game pitching one inning and striking out one.
Adrianna Barnes suffered the loss after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs.
What's next
The Saints will get back on the road on March 24-25 for two conference doubleheaders against Texas College in Tyler, Texas. On March 26-27, the Saints will play Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
