TYLER, TEXAS (March 26, 2017) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball shut out the Texas College Steers in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) doubleheader 13-0 and 8-0. The second doubleheader was cancelled due to rain in the area.
The wins improve the Saints record to 12-16 overall and 5-9 in conference, while the Steers drop to 0-6 overall and 0-6 in conference.
Head Coach James Kling commented, "We were glad to get two wins in on Friday before the rain hit. We are preparing for a good Jarvis team on Sunday and we need to play well."
Game one
In the first game, Cheyanne Carter (JR/Hempstead, Texas) (1-2-1) earned the win after pitching three innings, while striking out six and allowing one hit. Erika Diaz (FR/Alice, Texas) closed out the game, going two innings and striking out five.
Jaymee Washington suffered the loss for the Steers. She went five innings, allowing 14 hits and 13 runs, while walking nine.
Destiny Vega (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) led the Saints' offense, going 3-3, adding one run. Kristina Tiffany (SO/San Antonio, Texas) went 1-1, adding three runs and three RBIs. She hit her fourth home run of the season. Amanda Guerra (SO/Stafford, Texas) went 2-2, scoring one run and adding two RBIs. Taylor Doege (JR/San Antonio, Texas) went 2-2, scoring two runs and adding one RBI. She hit her ninth double of the season. Brittany Martinez (SR/El Paso, Texas) went 2-4, adding one run and one RBI. Diaz went 2-2, adding two runs and one RBI.
Texas College's Alexandria Sims accounted for the Steers only hit.
Game two:
Diaz (3-4) pitched three innings in the second game to earn the win. She allowed one hit, while striking out six. Tiffany pitched for the first time while at OLLU. She went two innings and allowed one hit, while striking out two.
For Texas College, Ezaria Harris pitched all five innings, allowing eight hits and eight runs, while walking 11.
Amanda Sanchez (JR/San Antonio, Texas), Doege and Guerra all had two hits. Sanchez, Doege and Vega added two RBIs. Jazzlynn Robles (FR/Santa Rosa, Texas) scored one run and added one RBI. Guerra and Vega both had a double.
Chloe Rogers and Klarissa Hernandez accounted for the two hits for Texas College.
What's next
The Saints are playing Jarvis Christian College today, winning the first game 7-0. They will play one more game today and a doubleheader tomorrow. One Wednesday, the Saints return home to host NCAA DIII Southwestern University for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, they added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
