VICTORIA, TEXAS (April 21-22, 2017) – In the last doubleheaders of the regular season, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team dropped three of four to the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV).
The Saints finish the regular season with an overall record of 22-20 and Red River Athletic Conference record of 14-12. UHV improves to 30-17 overall and 21-6 in conference.
Head Coach James Kling commented, "We had a tough weekend at UHV. We will now prepare for the conference tournament and hopefully play well there."
Game one
The Saints added the first run of the game in the second inning. Jana Arena (JR/Sugar Land, Texas) doubled to center to send Lauren Garza (JR/McAllen, Texas) home and give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Saints added four runs. Amanda Guerra (SO/Stafford, Texas) started the rally for the Saints on a double. Garza got to base on a single, sending Guerra home. Amanda Sanchez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) made it to first on an error by UHV's Gabby Davila. Brittany Martinez (SR/El Paso, Texas) singled to the outfield, and with the bases loaded, Kristina Tiffany (SO/San Antonio, Texas) walked to send Garza home. A hit from Alexis Macias (JR/San Antonio, Texas) scored Sanchez and Martinez and the Saints took the 5-0 lead.
UHV's Aubri Hockebury homered in the fourth inning to move the game to 5-1.
The Saints scored another run in the fifth inning after Sanchez's single scored Guerra and the Saints took the 6-1 lead.
A double from UHV's Emily Flores scored Gabby Davila and Hockenbury and the Saints still led 6-3. And after two scoreless innings, the Saints won game one 6-3.
Garza led the Saint' offense going 2-3, scoring two runs and adding one RBI. Guerra went 2-4 and scored two runs. Macias went 1-4 and added two RBIs.
UHV's Hockenbury went 2-2, scoring two runs and adding one RBI. Davila went 2-3 and scored one run.
Destiny Vega (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) secured the win for the Saints after pitching five innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out three. Taylor Doege (JR/San Antonio, Texas) pitched two innings for the save.
UHV's Haley Beam suffered the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs.
Game two
Guerra reached base in the first inning on a fielder's choice, and Tiffany came home to score to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last long as the Jaguars added five runs to close out the first inning. Michelle Revels scored on a hit from Flores. A hit from Kathryn Wright sent Beam home. Vega came in to relieve Saints pitcher Doege. Flores was then able to steal third and home on a wild throw from OLLU's Brooke Vasquez (JR/Buda, Texas). Jamison Dumont hit a double to left field, and Wright came home. Madeline Herrera hit another double to send Dumont home, and the Jaguars took the 5-1 lead.
The Jaguars added another run in the second inning. Hockebury's double scored Davila moving the Jaguars to 6-1.
OLLU's Guerra hit a double in the third inning, and Macias came home in the third inning. Another double from Vega, sent Guerra home, and the game moved to 6-3.
The Jaguars exploded again in the sixth inning, scoring five more runs. Jamie Macek, Davila, Revels. Alyssa Dial and Flores scored to give the Jaguars the 11-3 lead and the win, ending the game early in the sixth inning.
Guerra led the Saints offense going 1-2, scoring one run and adding two RBIs.
Revels guided her team going 3-4, scoring three runs.
Doege suffered the loss for the Saints after pitching .2 innings, allowing three hits and four runs. Erika Diaz (FR/Alice, Texas) pitched .2 innings and allowed four hits and two runs. Cheyanne Carter (JR/Hempstead, Texas) pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Garza faced three batters and allowed three hits and one run.
Revels pitched the complete game, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out three.
Game three
The game stayed scoreless through the fifth inning, when Herrera doubled to center, and she later scored. Hockebury singled and Jordan Hoefling came home.
The Saints were not able to score and the game ended with the Jaguars winning 2-0.
Doege, Arena and Sanchez accounted for the Saints three hits. UHV's Wright led her team, going 2-3.
Vega suffered the loss, pitching all six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out three.
Kelsey Tidrick earned the win for UHV going all seven innings, allowing three hits, while striking out three.
Game four
OLLU scored first to begin the last game. Macias came home on a hit from Guerra.
The Saints kept the lead through the sixth inning, when UHV tied the game. A hit from Revels sent Davila home.
In one extra inning, UHV scored the winning run. With the bases loaded, Flores reached first on a walk, and Macek came home to score to win the game 2-1.
Guerra led the team on offense for OLLU going 2-4, adding one RBI.
Macek, Davila and Wright each had two hits for the Jaguars.
Garza suffered the loss for the Saints after pitching all seven innings. She allowed eight hits and two runs.
Revels earned the win, pitching eight innings, allowing six hits and one run.
What's next
LSU-Alexandria (24-1/41-6) has captured the RRAC regular season title. UHV is four games behind, followed by OLLU. The University of the Southwest (13-11/16-20) and Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) round up the five conference tournament participants. The tournament will take place May 5-7 in Farmers' Branch, Texas.
