SAN ANTONIO (April 24, 2017) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball lost its last nonconference game of the season to the NCAA Division III Trinity University Tigers by a score of 18-8 in seven innings.
With the loss, the Saints drop to 21-25 on the season. Trinity improves to 24-14 and 3-2 all-time against OLLU.
"We did not play our best baseball tonight. We gave them too many opportunities and struggled to make the necessary adjustments on the mound," Head Coach Jeremy Flores said. "We need to clean up things on the defensive side and compete better overall. We will get back to work tomorrow and prepare for a very important conference series."
Garrett Moltzan (FR/Justin, Texas) started the game on the mound for the Saints, struggling through two innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits.
The Saints struck first in the top of the second inning, getting a RBI single to center from Isaiah Guzman (JR/Richardson, Texas) to score Jose Diaz (FR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba), who reached base by getting hit by a pitch.
Trinity answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits with an error. After Jacob Pool (SO/Leander, Texas) homered to left in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers responded with a home run to left field from Michael Goodrich. After a single from Michael Davis, the Saints' defense committed two consecutive errors to score two runs. For the inning, OLLU gave up five runs on five hits with two errors.
Mike Light (JR/San Antonio, Texas) sparked the Saints' biggest inning of the game with a home run to right field. OLLU scored five runs on three hits in the inning, taking advantage of one error.
After Trinity scored three runs in the fifth inning, the Saints and Tigers scored a run each in the sixth and the seventh inning, with Trinity ending the game by 10-run rule on a walk-off home run to left-center from Mason Meredith.
Diaz was 1-for-2 for the Saints with an RBI and two runs scored. Mike Light was 1-for-2 with a home run. Moltzan picked up the loss on the mound.
The Saints will close out the regular season with a three-game conference series on the road against the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) from April 28-29, with the doubleheader on the second day. OLLU is 4-9 all-time against UHV.
Our Lady of the Lake University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016-2017 as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University began competing in the NAIA in men's soccer and volleyball in 2007. A year later, it added women's soccer, golf and tennis. In 2009, the Saints began competing in cross-country, softball and basketball. In 2014, OLLU added two more sports — baseball and track and field. There are now 13 intercollegiate athletic teams at OLLU. All athletic alumni and up to two family members will receive free admission to basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. Baseball is not included in this special offer. All other home games are free and open to the public.
