HOUSTON (Dec. 7, 2017) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball opened its Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) schedule on Thursday, and with an outstanding performance from Quintianna LeShore (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.), the Saints recorded an 88-75 win over the University of St. Thomas (UST).
The Saints improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the RRAC, while the Celts drop to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, "This was a good way to start conference. We dictated the tempo of the game and were able to create turnovers. It's always nice to get a road win. I thought our guards started attacking the basket and that was a key to our success. We need to enjoy this tonight and refocus for Saturday."
The Saints are 13-0 against the Celts in games dating back to 2011.
The Saints started the game on top, but the team's effort fell short after the sixth minute when St. Thomas went on an 8-0 run to lead 15-7. The Celts kept pounding away, led by Briana De Los Santos, as they battled to a 19-10 lead. The first quarter ended with the Saints trailing 22-13.
Ashley Ford started the second quarter with a three to give St. Thomas their biggest lead of the game at 25-13. OLLU's Regina Sheffield (JR/Menitee, Calif.) answered with her own three, and that started a 10-0 run to get the Saints to within two at 25-23. Unique Finley took her team back to a four-point lead, and De Los Santos gave the Celts the 31-25 advantage. Julia Rendon (SR/San Antonio, Texas) hit a three to move the Saints to within one, but the Celts climbed back up to lead by seven with a little more than a minute left in the half. Nakia Page (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) made a 3-pointer, and LeShore followed with a basket off a turnover for the Saints. OLLU's Alexis Oaks (SO/College Station, Texas) made a shot to tie the game at the buzzer at 38-38.
The Celts kept the third quarter close, tying the game twice and leading through three-minute mark. A pair of free throws from Lena Wilson (SO/Converse, Texas) gave the Saints their first lead since the beginning of the game at 52-51. The Saints carried the game from that point on, taking a game-high lead of nine at 62-53. The third quarter ended with the Saints leading 64-58.
The Saints reached a double-digit lead at the seven-minute mark and Kasey Saldana (SO/San Antonio, Texas) sank a field goal to give the Saints the 76-62 lead. Another basket from Saldana accounted for the Saints largest lead of the game at 82-66. LeShore ended the game with two free throws giving the Saints the 88-75 win.
