SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 9-10, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team hosted a round-robin tournament featuring Sterling College (SC) and Central Methodist University (CMU) – the 24th ranked team in the NAIA. The Saints opened the tournament on Friday with an 8-7 win over Sterling. CMU defeated SC 8-5 in the second game, and CMU closed out the evening with a 16-0 win over the Saints.
On Saturday, CMU defeated Sterling 8-5 to open the day. The Saints lost 8-2 to Sterling, and OLLU defeated CMU 3-2 to end the weekend.
OLLU is now 4-7, Sterling is 1-7 and CMU is 3-1.
Game One
The Saints got on board first with a run in the second inning. Enrique Ruiz III (SR/Helotes, Texas) hit a short single to the short stop to send pinch-runner Andrew Ogletree (FR/Mission, Texas) home.
Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) doubled in the third inning to send Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) home, and Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) hit into a fielder's choice, tagging Anciso out, but sending Nick Ludwig (JR/Tomball, Texas) home to give the Saints the 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Warriors scored four runs to take over the lead. Ryan Sedillo's double scored Daniel Medina, and a triple from Kaleb Wersland scored Sedillo and Conyal Cody III. Corey Davis reached first on a Saints' error, and Wersland came home to score.
The Warriors added one run in the fifth inning. Cody hit a double to send Hunter Green home and the Warriors now led 5-3.
SC scored two more runs in the sixth inning. AJ Romer and Green hit doubles, scoring Romer and Brandon Bailey.
With the score at 7-3 in favor of the Warriors, the Saints kicked off a 4-run rally in the sixth to tie the game. Three of the four runs scored were with the bases loaded on walks. The fourth run came on a sacrifice fly out from Brown that scored Mihalov. The inning featured four Warriors pitchers.
The game went into extra innings, and in the bottom of the eighth. Ty Cook (FR/Highlands, Texas), pinch-running for Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas), scored the winning run on a single from Ryan Ramsey (JR/Grapevine, Texas) to win the game.
Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound, and pitched five innings. He allowed seven hits and five runs, while striking out nine. Logan Garza (FR/Round Rock, Texas) replaced Caleb Mireles (SR/Del Rio, Texas) on the mound and secured the win for the Saints after pitching two innings and striking out three.
Anciso went 1-4 and had two RBIs. Brown went 1-3 and also had two RBIs.
Game Two
In the second game, with a light shower on the field, the Saints could not put anything together. CMU scored in the third inning on a double from Randy Perez that sent David Salgueiro home.
In the fourth inning, the Eagles added five more runs. Another double from Perez scored Riley Richarz and Salgueiro. Luis Sterling tripled, sending Jared Johnson, Perez and Logan Haring home.
With the game at 6-0, the Eagles scored eight more runs in the fifth inning. Scoring for CMU were Fernando Villegas, Aneudy DeLaCruz, Richarz, Salgueiro, Johnson, Haring, Austin Bucher and Damian Rodriguez.
After taking a 14-0 lead, CMU scored two more runs in the seventh inning. Matt Widhalm singled and Rodriguez hit a home run. After the Saints failed to answer in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles won 16-0.
Cook suffered the loss for the Saints after starting on the mound, allowing eight hits and six runs, while striking out three.
Jorge Collazo Jr. (FR/San Antonio, Texas) (2-2) and Ramsey (2-3) accounted for the Saints four hits.
Game Three
Sterling scored the first runs of the game in the second inning. Cody doubled, and Green came home. Cody followed with a run after a Saints error. Wesland hit a two-run homer and drove in Sedillo to give the Warriors the 4-0 lead.
Sterling added two more runs in the fourth inning. Romer singled and Tobias Culpepper came home. A hit from Green scored Romer, and the Warriors now led 6-0.
The Saints were finally able to add a run to the board. In the fourth inning, Jacob Mitchell (FR/Harker Heights, Texas) hit a double. With Collazo and Mike Light (SR/San Antonio, Texas) reaching base, a walk from Alec Martinez (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) sent Mitchell home.
The Warriors scored two more runs in the seventh inning. Cody scored on a single from Wersland, and Sedillo came home after a Saints error. The Warriors increased their lead to 8-1.
A hit from Mitchell in the seventh sent pinch-runner Erik Trevino (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) home. The game ended with the Warriors winning 8-2.
JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) suffered the loss after pitching three innings, allowing four hits and four runs, while striking out four.
Anciso went 2-4, and Mitchell went 2-4, adding one run and one RBI.
Game Four
Central Methodist scored first in the third inning. Brandon Alcala scored on a Saints error.
The Saints tied the game in the sixth inning. Mitchell hit a double, and Cook came home to score.
The Eagles answered quickly in the top of the seventh after Andrew Thomas hit a triple, and after a bad throw that sent the ball into the Saints dugout, he was able to come home to score and give his team the 2-1 lead.
Collazo started the seventh inning on a walk. Mihalov also reached base on a walk, Cameron Guzman (SO/San Antonio, Texas) hit into a fielder's choice that resulted in Collazo being called out. Anciso singled and Mihalov scored the tying run. Ludwig came up to bat and hit a single to right, and Guzman was able to come home to score the winning run.
Alec Martinez earned the win for the Saints after pitching a complete game. He allowed three hits and two runs while striking out eight.
Anciso went 3-4 with one RBI.
What's next
The Saints travel a few miles to play a 3-game series against NCAA D2 St. Mary's University on Feb. 16-17. Game times are 4/7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
