MARSHALL, TEXAS (March 10, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints baseball team outscored Wiley College 34-27, but lost the three-game series 1-2 over the weekend. In the doubleheader on Friday, the Saints lost 9-8 and won 20-6. In today's final game in the Red River Athletic Conference series, the Saints lost 12-6. The Saints drop to 9-16 overall and 3-3 in conference, while Wiley improves to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in conference.
The Saints are 7-5 against the Wildcats. Last season, they won both games 4-2 and 6-5. The third game of the conference series was rained out.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "We have to learn that we can't pick and choose when we want to play. In the two losses, we got beat in every phase of the game. Our mentality has to get better from pitch one through the last pitch. They came to play today, and we did not."
Game One
The Saints opened the game with a five-run rally in the first inning. Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) got to first after being hit by the pitcher. Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) and Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) reached the base on walks, and a wild pitch sent Brown home. A balk from Wiley pitcher Austin Rotramel sent Anciso home. Jorge Collazo Jr. (FR/San Antonio, Texas) singled to score Diaz. Ryan Ramsey (JR/Grapevine, Texas) hit short to the pitcher, and Mick Hernandez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) came home. Collazo was also able to score on an error. The Saints took the 5-0 lead.
The game stayed at 5-0 through the bottom of the fourth inning when Wiley scored four runs. Angel Rivera homered to score Justin Harmon and Darian Fleming. Tyler Baumann followed with another homer. The Saints still led 5-4.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats added three more runs to take the lead. Brian Scott tripled, and Luis Santiago hit a sac fly to send Scott home. Ruben Hancock hit a double, and pinch-runner Joshua Simon and Justice Brown later scored on a hit from Angel Rivera. Triston Scherer (FR/Crosby, Texas) replaced Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) on the mound for the Saints, and he closed out the inning as the Wildcats took the lead at 7-5.
The Saints added two runs in the sixth inning. A wild pitch from Austin Rotramel sent Brown home to score. Jose Diaz hit a sac fly and Alec Martinez (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) came home to tie the score at 7-7.
Wiley scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. Dominic Tezeno scored on a Saints' error. The Wildcats took the 8-7 lead.
The Saints tied the game again in the seventh inning. Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) scored on a wild pitch by Wiley's Brandon Bilnoski.
The Wildcats closed out the game with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With Logan Garza (FR/Round Rock, Texas) now in to pitch, Angel Rivera hit a sac fly to send Jerry Johnson home to score.
Garza suffered the loss for the Saints. He allowed the winning run to score.
Brown led the Saints on offense, going 2-3, adding two runs. Collazo went 1-3, adding one run and one RBI.
Game Two
The second game had the Wildcats scoring first in the second inning. Justice Brown hit a double, and he scored after a double from Darian Flemming.
The Saints tied the game in the fourth inning. Anciso reached first on a hit, and Jacob Mitchell (FR/Harker Heights, Texas) doubled to send him home.
In the fifth inning, the Saints had an eight-run rally to take the 9-1 lead. Ryan Chapa (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) got on base on an error by Wiley's Brian Scott Jr. Brown hit a double to send Chapa home. Martinez walked to first, and Anciso got to base on a hit to score Brown. Mitchell walked and with the bases loaded, Jose Diaz hit a grand-slam home run to give the Saints the 7-1 lead. Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) followed with a single home run. Brown hit a sac fly to score Enrique Ruiz III (SR/Helotes, Texas). The Saints now led 9-1.
Wiley scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Angel Rivera hit a double, and he later scored on a passed ball by Saints' catcher Robert Lopez. Brian Scott Jr. hit a single and Jerry Johnson came home, and the Saints now led 9-3.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Saints added six runs. Anciso got to base on a hit, and Mitchell followed. Diaz walked to first. A hit from Lopez sent Anciso home. With the bases loaded, Ruiz hit the game's second grand-slam home run. Ryan Ramsey followed with a single home run, and the Saints took the 15-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wiley added two runs. Brown hit a double, and he scored on a hit from Dominic Tezeno. Darian Fleming scored after a Saints' error, and the Saints now led 15-5.
The Saints added five runs in the seventh inning. Nick Ludwig (JR/Tomball, Texas) started the rally with a home run. Mitchell, Diaz and Mike Light (SR/San Antonio, Texas) walked to base, and Ruiz hit his second and the game's third grand-slam home run to give the Saints the 20-3 lead.
Wiley added one run to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh. Markus Garza grounded out, and Dorian Lewis came home to score. The Saints won 20-6.
JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound for the Saints, and he earned the win. He pitched five innings, and allowed six hits and three runs while striking out six.
Anciso led the Saints on offense going 4-4, adding three runs and one RBI. Ruiz went 2-2, adding three runs and eight RBIs. Mitchell went 2-3, adding three runs. Diaz went 1-2, adding three runs and four RBIs. Lopez went 2-4, adding one run and two RBIs.
Game Three
The Saints scored first in the final game of the series in the third inning. Anciso hit a single and Ramsey came home to score. With the bases loaded, Diaz walked, and Martinez came home to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.
Wiley scored a run in the bottom of the third. Luis Santiago hit a single to the outfield, and Tezeno came home. The Saints now led 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wildcats scored six runs. Justin Harmon, Angel Rivera, Jerry Johnson, Dominic Tezeno, Brian Scott Jr. and Luis Santiago came home to give the Wildcats the 7-2 lead.
OLLU added two runs in the top of the fifth. Anciso hit a two-run homer scoring Brown. The Wildcats now led 7-4.
Wiley scored two runs in the fifth inning. A hit from Santiago sent Fleming and Rivera home. They increased their lead to 9-4.
Wiley added three more runs in the sixth inning. Garrett Barber, Fleming and Rivera scored to give Wiley the 12-4 lead.
OLLU scored one more run in the eighth inning. Mitchell scored after a fielder's choice from Ryan Ramsey got Jose Diaz out. The Wildcats now led 12-5.
The Saints added their final run in the ninth. Alec Martinez hit a single homer, and the game ended shortly after with the Wildcats winning 12-6.
Ty Cook (FR/Highlands, Texas) suffered the loss for the Saints. He started on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and seven runs while striking out three.
Anciso led the Saints on offense going 2-5, adding one run and three RBIs. Diaz went 2-4 and added one RBI.
