KINGSVILLE, TEXAS (March 27, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team travelled south for a nonconference game against NCAA D2 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK). The Saints scored in the last inning to prevent a shutout as the Javelinas pulled off the 8-1 win.
The Saints are now 15-20 overall, while TAMUK improves to 21-7.
The Saints are 0-3 against the Javelinas. Last year, the Saints dropped their game 0-10 and the previous year, they lost 3-4.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "We didn't play with an expectation to win, and it showed."
The Saints started on offense and Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) got the game's first hit, but the team could not put any kind of rally together. The Javelinas' lead-off batter Kohl Ullman got on base on a bunt, and Austin Ingraham hit a home run to give them the 2-0 lead.
TAMUK added one run in the third inning. Levi Zents singled to get on base, and Pablo Hernandez doubled to right, to send Zents home. Hernandez advanced to third on a groundout by Hayden Fails, and then scored on a wild pitch by Saints pitcher Caleb Mireles (SR/Del Rio, Texas). The Javelinas took the 4-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Ullman scored on a throwing error by the Saints. Tony Esparza (SO/Spring, Texas) came in to relieve Mireles on the mound for the Saints. Ingraham was able to score off a fielder's choice, and Hernandez scored on another error by the Saints. TAMUK took the 7-0 lead.
Esparza stayed on the mound through the sevent inning, and he was able to prevent any more runs from scoring. Triston Scherer (FR/Crosby, Texas) came in to pitch in relief in the seventh and he stayed in through the eighth. Jesus Ramirez (JR/Quitman, Texas) closed out the game for the Saints. Dax McCleary was able to score on a walk with the bases loaded.
With the Javelinas leading 8-1 going into the ninth inning, Erik Trevino (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) walked to first for the Saints. Mick Hernandez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) hit a single to center, and Trevino scored on a throwing error by TAMUK's catcher.
The game ended with the Javelinas winning 8-1.
Jorge Collazo Jr. (FR/San Antonio, Texas), Daniel Anciso, Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba), Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) and Mick Hernandez all got one hit for the Saints. Collazo and Diaz's were doubles.
Caleb Mireles suffered the loss for the Saints. He pitched 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs and seven hits while walking four and striking out two. Scherer allowed one run and struck out four.
The Saints will get back to their Red River Athletic Conference schedule and will travel to Louisiana to play LSU-Shreveport on March 30-31.
