SAN ANTONIO (April 1, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team delivered only the second loss all season to the LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) Pilots to begin the three-game series that was supposed to be played in Shreveport. Weather in the Louisiana area precipitated the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC( series be moved to San Antonio. The 4-1 win for the Saints was followed by a 5-9 and 5-8 loss.
OLLU is now 16-22 overall and 8-7 in the RRAC, while the Pilots improve to 26-13 overall and 13-2 in conference.
The Saints are 4-12 against the Pilots.
Game One
Starting pitcher Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) returned to the mound with another stellar performance after pitching 12 innings last week against Texas A&M University – Texarkana. Against the Eagles, he struck out nine and allowed no walks, garnering him RRAC Pitcher of the Week honors. On Friday, Hackett pitched a seven-inning complete game, and repeated a nine-strikeout performance.
Helping Hackett on offense was Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas), who went 3-4, adding one RBI. Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) went 2-3 and also added an RBI. Both hit doubles for the Saints.
Game Two
The Pilots got on board in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Saints pitcher Ty Cook (FR/Highlands, Texas) hit Matthew Hammock, giving Robert Herrera the opportunity to come home. The Pilots took the 1-0 lead.
With Jacob Mitchell (FR/Harker Heights, Texas) walking to first, Diaz hit a double, and Mitchell came home. Ryan Ramsey (JR/Grapevine, Texas) singled to right field, and Diaz scored to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.
The Pilots took the 3-2 lead in the third inning. Jake Gray hit a double, and Layton Laird came home. Cain Brady hit to right, and Chase Spatafora scored.
The Saints tied the game in the fourth inning. Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) hit, and Diaz came home. The game was now 3-3.
In the fifth inning, a wild pitch by Hunter Cunningham sent Ryan Chapa (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) home. Alec Martinez (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) hit an infield grounder, and Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) came home to give the Saints the 5-3 lead.
Cain Brady hit a double in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Chase Spatafora and Carlos Andujar scored. Brendan Meade hit another double and Brady came home. The Pilots took the 6-5 lead.
LSUS rallied in the sixth inning scoring another three runs. Laird doubled and Herrera scored. Hammock hit to the right field and Beaux Guilbeau scored. Gray hit a sac fly, and Laird scored to give the Pilots the 9-5 lead and win.
Ty Cook suffered the loss after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs.
Diaz went 1-4, adding two runs and one RBI. Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) went 3-4, and Mihalov went 2-4.
Game Three
Laird reached first on a Saints error in the first inning, and Herrera came home to give the Pilots the 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Pilots added four runs. Kevin Vanasselberg scored on another Saints error. Hammock singled to right to send Herrera home. Gray also hit to right and Spatafora and Laird came home, and the Pilots took the 5-0 lead.
The Saints added on run in the fourth inning. A wild pitch from Adrian Cook gave Ramsey the chance to score. The Pilots led 5-1.
LSUS added two runs in the fifth inning. Vanasselberg hit an infield single, sending both Gray and Brady home. The Pilots took the 7-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Martinez hit a sac fly, and both Chapa and Brown scored. The Pilots now led 7-3.
Caleb Lasseigne doubled to left, and Laird scored to give the Pilots the 8-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Saints scored two runs. Mike Light (SR/San Antonio, Texas) singled to left, sending Chapa and Brown home. The game ended with the Pilots winning 8-5.
JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) suffered the loss for the Saints. He pitched two innings and allowed five hits and five runs.
Brown went 2-5, adding two runs. Light went 1-1 and added two RBIs.
