SAN ANTONIO (April 7, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team secured two of three wins against Jarvis Christian College behind stellar pitching performances from Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas). The Saints won the first game 9-3 and the third game 13-1. They dropped the second game 5-7 to move to 18-23 overall and 10-8 in the Red River Athletic Conference. Jarvis is now 20-20 overall and 10-8 in conference.
The Saints are 4-8 against the Bulldogs. Last season, OLLU dropped both games 5-6 and 5-10.
Game One
Hackett had a tough first inning, allowing two runs and one hit. Bryan Peguero singled to left, and Ismael De Los Santos came home to score. Chandler Matthews stole third and home to give Jarvis the 2-0 lead.
Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) walked in the bottom of the first inning, and he came home after a hit from Jacob Mitchell (FR/Harker Heights, Texas).
In the third inning, Matt Mihalov (SO/Conroe, Texas) hit a spectacular triple to right field, but he overran the base and was thrown out. Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) followed with a hit, and Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) hit a double to send Brown home. Andrew Ogletree (FR/Mission, Texas) came in to run for Lopez, and he scored after a hit from Anciso. Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) hit a double, and Anciso came home. Xavier Solis (SO/Victoria, Texas) followed with another double, and both Mitchell and Diaz came home. The Saints took the 6-2 lead.
Ogletree was able to score in the fourth inning after Diaz hit into a double play. The Saints increased their lead to 7-2.
Jarvis scored a run in the seventh inning. Angel Guillen hit to the outfield, and Austin Pulcher scored. The Saints now led 7-3.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mihalov hit to left field, and Alec Martinez (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) came home. Robert Lopez hit to short to send Mihalov home, and the Saints took the 9-3 lead and the win.
Hackett matched a career-best 12 strikeouts on eight innings of pitching to earn the win. He allowed five hits and three runs.
Lopez went 3-5, adding two RBIs. Mitchell went 2-2, adding one run and one RBI. Mihalov went 2-3 and added one run and one RBI.
Game Two
The Bulldogs started the second game with a run in the first inning. With the bases loaded by Saints pitcher Alec Martinez, Anthony Ortiz walked to send De Los Santos home.
The Saints took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Mitchell hit a double, and both Brown and Ogletree came home. The Saints now led 2-1.
Jarvis tied the game in the second inning. Lawrence Anderson struck out, but reached first after Saints catcher Robert Lopez passed the third strike. De Los Santos was able to steal home on the same play.
In the third inning, Guillen singled to left and Pulcher came home. De Los Santos hit to centerfield, and Guillen scored to give Jarvis the 4-2 lead.
The Saints took the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third. Anciso hit a sac fly and Brown came home. Mihalov singled to first base, and both Ogletree and Diaz came home.
Jarvis scored three runs in the fifth inning. De Los Santos hit a double to right field, and Guillen and Garcia scored. De Los Santos stole third base and came home to give Jarvis the 7-5 lead and win.
Martinez suffered the loss after pitching 2.2 innings. He allowed three hits and four runs, while walking six and striking out four.
Lopez went 2-3. Mitchell went 1-3 and added two RBIs. Mihalov went 1-2 and added two RBIs.
Game Three
Saints starting pitcher JB Martinez had a tough start. After walking leadoff batter De Los Santos, Anderson bunted to Martinez, who sent a bad throw to first, allowing De Los Santos to score.
The Saints answered quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. After two quick groundouts, Anciso hit to left, and Mitchell and Diaz reached on a walk. Mike Light (SR/San Antonio, Texas) hit a double, and Anciso, Mitchell and Diaz came home. Mihalov singled to left and Ogletree home to give the Saints the 4-1 lead.
In the second inning, the Saints added two more runs. Anciso grounded out to short, giving Brown the opportunity to score. Mitchell followed with a triple and Martinez came home. The Saints took the 6-1 lead.
Light reached first on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning, sending Martinez home and the Saints increased their lead to 7-1.
In the fifth inning, Ramsey started a six-run rally with a double. Ryan Chapa (FR/Corpus Christi, Texas) hit to right field, and Brown followed with a hit to the opposite side to send Ramsey home. Martinez got a hit and Chapa scored. A balk by Jarvis pitcher Joel English sent Brown to home plate. Anciso grounded out to short, and Martinez went home. Jorge Collazo Jr. (FR/San Antonio, Texas) tripled to send Diaz and Ogletree home. The Saints increased their lead to 13-1. The game ended with the Saints winning 13-1.
JB Martinez pitched six innings to earn the win. He allowed five hits and one run while walking five and striking out three.
Alec Martinez went 3-4, adding three runs and one RBI. Ramsey went 2-4, adding one run. Light went 1-3, adding four RBIs.
