SHREVEPORT, LA. (May 6, 2018) – Weather delays prevented the Red River Athletic Conference Championship Tournament from its original schedule. The Saints, slated to begin the tournament on Friday, May 5, had to wait a day to play its first game. On Saturday, they faced Texas A&M University – Texarkana and fell to the Eagles 10-5. With the loss, the Saints moved on to a Sunday, 4:30 p.m. game against LSU-Shreveport, hoping to stay alive. Unfortunately, they dropped their second and final game 7-6 to end their season at 25-29.
Jordan Hackett (SR/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound for the Saints in the first game. He suffered the loss after pitching six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs, while striking out six.
Daniel Anciso (JR/Harlingen, Texas) led the Saints on offense, going 2-4, adding two RBIs. Robert Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) went 2-3 and had one RBI.
After Shreveport defeated the University of the Southwest 15-5, the Pilots were matched up with the Saints on Sunday in the tournament's fifth game.
JB Martinez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) started on the mound for OLLU. He opened the game allowing three runs on two hits. Carlos Andujar doubled to center, and Chase Spatafora and Layton Laird both scored. Cain Brady's hit sent Andujar home to give the Pilots the 3-0 lead.
In the third inning, Laird doubled, and Andujar singled to send Laird home to give the Pilots the 4-0 lead.
Matthew Hammock hit a double in the fourth inning, and he scored after a hit from Kevin Vanasselberg. LSUS now took a 5-0 lead.
The Saints came back in the bottom of the fourth to score three runs. Ryan Ramsey (JR/Grapevine, Texas) got an infield single, and Nick Ludwig (JR/Tomball, Texas) came home. Jacob Mitchell (FR/Harker Heights, Texas) hit to right and both Enrique Ruiz III (SR/Helotes, Texas) and Andrew Ogletree (FR/Mission, Texas) scored. The Pilots now led 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ramsey scored off a fielder's choice from Jose Diaz (SO/Pinar del Rio, Cuba). Anciso reached first on a Pilots error, and Mitchell came home to score. The Saints tied the game at 5-5.
The Pilots took back the lead in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded on Saints' pitcher Triston Scherer (FR/Crosby, Texas), a walk from Caleb Lasseigne sent Brady home.
Ruiz's double in the eighth sent Mick Hernandez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) home, and the game tied at 6-6.
In the top of the ninth inning, Brady hit a home run to give the Pilots the 7-6 lead. With the Saints failing to score in the bottom of the inning, the Pilots won.
Scherer suffered the loss after pitching five innings, allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out three.
Russell Brown (SR/San Antonio, Texas) went 2-5, and Ruiz went 2-5, adding a run and an RBI. Ramsey went 2-4, adding a run and an RBI. Jacob Mitchell went 1-2, adding one run and two RBIs.
