SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 9, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) volleyball team lost a hard-fought battle against Wiley College in the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The Saints fell 3-1 to end their season with a 15-14 overall record. Wiley improves to 19-3 and advances to the championship game against Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday.
The Saints showed signs of dominating in the first half as they pushed through a 11-7 lead. Wiley Coach Mike MacNeill displayed his frustration, which garnered him a yellow card from the referee. The Saints continued on to a set-high lead of seven before closing out the game with the 25-21 win.
Wiley came back in the second set to control the momentum after the Saints scored the first two points. This time, the Lady Wildcats led by a set-high seven points at 16-9. The Saints got to within four at 16-20, but the Lady Wildcats, with the power of Larissa Francisco, pushed through to win 25-19.
With the match tied at one, the Saints had hoped to come back in the third set, but Wiley proved too powerful. The Saints were not able to gain any lead, while the Lady Wildcats captured the 25-20 set-three win.
The Saints displayed a spark in the do-or-die set four as they took an early 4-1 lead. Nevertheless, Wiley was able to tie the set at five. The game stayed close until the ninth tie at 15, and then the Lady Wildcats were able to take over the lead through the rest of the set to win 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Anyssa Rivera (JR/El Paso, Texas) led the Saints in kills with 11 on 25 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .280. Bailei Hubbard (SO/Helotes, Texas) added 10 kills. Overall the Saints had 40 kills and 119 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .109.
Wiley's Francisco led her team with 16 kills, followed by 12 from Khrystyna Frank with 12 and Olena Fedorenko with 10. Overall the team had 55 kills and 122 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .311.
Anissa Tamez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) tallied 34 assists and the Saints had 37 total. Alexia Souza had 43 assists for Wiley, and the team totaled 48.
Wiley's Tsvetelina Bozhanova led her team with 14 digs and Souza added 11. The Lady Wildcats totaled 45 digs.
Both the Saints and the Lady Wildcats had 12 block assists. Tijana Kruta (FR/Bar, Montenegro) and Hubbard led the Saints with three each, while Olena Fedorenko led Wiley with four.
The Saints had five service aces and eight service errors, while Wiley had six aces and 15 service errors.
