SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 5, 2019)– The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team shocked the LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) Pilots to win 89-83. The Saints improve to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference. LSUS, who received votes in the latest NAIA poll, drops to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference.
The Saints are 10-11 against LSU-Shreveport. Last year, they lost both games to the Pilots.
The Pilots took charge of the game at the beginning, but after leading 5-2, Ethan White (SO/San Antonio, Texas) sank a three to tie the game at five. Another field goal from White gave the Saints their first lead at 9-8. The score flipped back and forth, until a basket from White gave the Saints the 30-26 lead. They continued to hold onto the lead going up by six. Michael Saladin (JR/Beaumont, Texas) gave the Saints a seven-point lead and Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.), a brand-new player on the team, made his basketball to take the Saints to 39-30. The Pilots closed out the half with a three and the Saints went into the locker room leading 43-39.
The Pilots narrowed the Saints lead in the second half as they got to within two. By the 17th minute, the Pilots pushed ahead to take over the lead at 47-46. The continued to retain the momentum to take a 10-point lead before the Saints could catch their breath. Carlson Goode (SO/Columbia, S.C.), playing in his first game of the season, sank a three and Darin Minniefield (SO/Houston, Texas) made a field goal to move the score to 54-59. With less than nine minutes left in the game, Brandon Joseph (SR/Houston, Texas) made both of his free throws to get the Saints to within one at 64-65. Joseph followed with a field goal to take back the lead at 66-65. The Saints were able to keep an even keel as they maintained the lead. They went up by eight after a shot from Monzon with about a minute left in the game. Jeff Garrett got fouled for the Pilots and his free throw was the last basket. The Saints won 89-83.
Ethan White led the Saints in scoring with 19 points, followed by Zachary Mucha (SO/El Paso, Texas) with 15, Brandon Joseph with 13 and Michael Saladin, Lennox Jones Jr. (JR/Richmond, Texas) and Ruben Monzon with 10 points each.
The Pilots were led by Rakim Lubin with 26 points, followed by Tim Colemen with 20, Amaad Wainright with 15 and Jeff Garrett with 11. Garrett added 10 rebounds.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 29-of-63 shooting for 46.0 percent, 11-of-22 from beyond the arc for 50.0 percent and 20-of-29 from the charity stripe for 69.0 percent. LSUS was 28-of-63 for 44.4 percent, 6-of-19 in 3-point attempts for 31.6 percent, and 21-of-25 free throws for 84.0 percent.
OLLU collected 32 rebounds, while LSUS tallied 35. OLLU forced 20 turnovers and committed 18.
The Saints will travel to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. on Jan. 12.
